Still despite the joy of watching Carlton and Collingwood fail miserably the first week of the finals showed nothing extraordinary and proved that Collingwood is a bunch of goers that fall short of the mark come September and the only team from outside the top 4 at the end of the Home and Away season that could break into the top 4 is Adelaide. I still expect a Geelong and St Kilda Grand Final. The week off will do the Cats the world of good.

what a dissapointing anti climax that game was today.

i went to the game expecting a bumper game, only to watch dribble from both teams.

Pies straight sets

Blues throw away a final

Bombers thrashed.

im loving this final series

I think saying their window is about to close is a bit harsh MT. They said the same thing about them 3 years ago.

Rocca, Presti are getting old but other than height aren't integral to the pies plans. O'Bree is a clanger king and Lockyer is just a solid pro. Couple of their under 22s are going to be stars. The real problem is not the age of their list but the quality. Saints had Riewoldt and Dal Santo really come to the fore. Pies have plenty of good finishers (Davis, Thomas, Didak etc) but lack the classy midfielders who can get control of a game and turn it the other way.

They always seems to get 110% out of their list Collingwood and can be commended for it, but unless they do a Sydney and catch a year when a lot of teams are rebuilding I doubt they'll win a flag under Malthouse because someone else is always peaking higher.
That bit in bold has been the case at Collingwood since Hafey was their coach. Average sides under good coaches that always fail in finals.

I'm not comparing them to Richmond and the awful state we're in with a side with no pride as all. The Pies do give their all for each other and are super fit. All I'm saying is most of their core that Malthouse has based his side around in the past 10 years will be retiring or slowing down at the very least in 3 years time. Davis will be 31 and Didak will be almost 30 as will many of their current side. That'll be a lot of experience lost. Thomas is still young (22) but he's a frontrunner. If they're relying on him when the chips are down then good luck to them. I can still remember someone calling him the next Hird  :rollin. Pendlebury is a gun (a massive loss for them if his leg is broken), Cloke should be a gun, Shaw is still young, O'Brien is good and Beams looks a footballer. As for the rest - meh! Earlier in the season when they were missing most of their core senior group due to injury they struggled. They were 3-5 IIRC before getting their 'names' back and then winning 12 out of 14.

Finishing in the finals thanks to their soft draws and with the new teams coming in hogging the first round picks will make it harder for the Pies to find the A-graders they need to remain a genuine top 4 side. I'm not saying they'll fall away completely but IMHO their window will close in 2012 which times in with the end of Malthouse's reign. It should be interesting behind closed doors discussing recruiting with Micky coaching for the now and Bucks as coach in waiting. It won't surprise me if the Pies top up this draft/trade period going all out for a flag in the next two years.

MT can say now Collingwood will make the finals for the next 5 years, we are miles behind them & so are alot of other sides.
Collingwood also got beaten by Adelaide at the Dome in R22 last year then beat them in the finals
l think you will see a different side next week but if they go out in straight sets it would be funny living here  ;D

5 years? Very hard to make that many finals in a row now days. The Swans did (7 years?) but we've seen this year their run has ended and they've dropped down the ladder as their champions aged and retired.

Go Crows  ;D

Honestly TigerMonk, don't throw your money away. The Crows will win easily. Collingwood are just an honest bunch of battlers who get gifted a very dishonest draw every year. As such they are found out in September time and time again. They also  like playing ugly footy with plenty of extra numbers behind the ball. The Saints just happen to be better at it.

The Pies will probably be favourite as the game is at the 'G but just on that final last year the Crows were missing Burton, Porplyzia, Hentschel, Reilly and Dangerfield. The Crows forward is functioning much more potently now as well. No Pendelbury for the Pies either this time around. I'll laugh my head off if the Pies go out in straight sets.

...Then get ready for some cranial re-attachment surgery MT.The Mudpies are coming off a six day break after a bruising encounter, compared to the Crows with an eight day break after a training run. They've lost Pendlebury and Rocca, and I bet Daisy Thomas in particular will be sore and sorry. And more important than any of that - they'll be playing against a vastly superior team. PIES ARE GAAAWN!!

Quirky stat from a Magpies forum:

Magpies under Malthouse in finals

7 wins - all against interstate sides

6 losses - all against Victorian sides

Are they counting Lions as Victorians or not counting GFs?

Thomas is fine there aint a thing wrong with him, The game was not that bruising so there will be no excuses coming up against the Crows.
Crows have the odds against them playing against a vocal Victorian crowd that will give them hell.
No-one will miss Rocca & Pendlebury has been playing injured & not giving much anyway so they will be strengthened with both those players out.
McCarthy & Sidebottom will be dropped & Dick will return with Wood which will match up better against the Crows

-Sigh- This could just go round and round in circles. Obviously you really rate the Pies, and obviously I really don't.I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
