3 years at the earliest.  I'm not holding my breath. That's my 2 cents.

we've got a terrific platform of young talent, as evidenced by the interest our out of contract stars attracted from rival clubs...with 6 or so selctions in the top 40, whoa, look out , we'll be ready to make a real run at it, especially now that we've sacked the most patently uselss coach and all those culpable in the atrocities committed to punt rd in last 5 years, the only way is up...so the answer is just how fast...time will tell

This might give us some indication....

COLLINGWOOD               ST KILDA                WESTERN BULLDOGS                HAWTHORN
1999...16th                    2000...16th           2003....16th                         2004...15th
2000...15th                    2001...15th           2004....14th                         2005...14th
2001....9th                     2002...15th           2005...9th                           2006...11th
20002...4th(GF)               2003...11th           2006...8th                           2007....5th

                                                               2008....3rd

So with some conservative optomism I predict our future looks a little like this....

2010.....total write off
2011....a return to competitiveness
2012....making the 8
2013...pushing top 4

Let's hope so mat. The way we play and gameplan will have a big say as well and of course our recruiting.

The Hawks and Bulldogs current crop began being put together in 1999-2001 so it can take 8 years for a full rebuild. The Saints also have taken 8 or 9 years to get to where they are now as legitimate challengers for a flag. Geelong also took 8 years to reach the holy grail. As Ramps has said previously a rebuild can take two waves when starting from scratch. A first wave to initially build a young core and then the second wave to build around that young core and develop the list into a strong united team. Hopefully we are in that middle period to be on target for a 2013 finals campaign. More pain to come in 2010-11 before that happens though  :-\.

Finals in 2012 should be the plan.
I doubt greatly we'll make it in 2011 although if the rebuild is showing signs of being successful our competitiveness in games will improve markedly in the latter half of 2011.
With what we have been through as fans I'm willing to accept that. Anything less and its another failure.  Dimma at least has something other RFC coaches has not had, patience from the fans to take a few years to tinker with the list for a plan of long term success rather than expecting the new coach to produce a miracle with apiece of gum hiding gaping holes in the dam wall  with a head on car crash of a list and take the club to finals straight away.

Drafting kids does not assure you of becoming sucsessful- we need to draft the right kids and develop them or we will have a list of young useless kids not old useless ones like this year. We really need to change things down at Tigerland, the kids we have drafted over the last 5 years just don't seemed to have improved the way others clubs have.
And to answer the question, how long, it takes what it takes, lets just hope they get the rebuild right this time.

Nice stats

If our path is to be like the bulldogs then we could be 3 years into it already.  But maybe not.

We did not draft nowhere near enough kids in the last 4 years. 2 or 3 kids per National draft and not making any player trades for picks  is not rebuilding. We only have ourselves to blame when a past draft like 2005 blows up in our face and is a total waste. Even with last year's draft, if Vickery and Post both end up guns as we all hope we still only get 2 kids from that National draft because that's all we drafted. Our recruiting philosophy has been all wrong.

It will take a whole lot longer if we trade away our draft picks for Burgoyne or Adcock or Hooper or whoever.

i'll be satisfied if we make finals in 2011 even if we just make it.
hopefully next year (at least in the second half of the year) we can compete against the bottom half sides.
