Port interested in Simmonds (Australian)
« on: October 05, 2009, 04:26:18 AM »
The recent retirement of Port Adelaide ruckman Brendon Lade has led to the Power desperately seeking a replacement. The club has already made overtures to Carlton about Shaun Hampson and to Melbourne regarding Mark Jamar. Port is today expected to discuss Troy Simmonds' future with Richmond.

Hes tradeable because he only has 1 maybe 2 years left,  but he is not tradeable for just Mitch Farmer. Farmer was going to be delisted anyway. Im not saying he is worth much, but he is a ruckman, we dont have a decent experienced ruckman, and as such we should be compensated commensurately.

i think i read on PRE that we had thought about re-signing him but we're putting it off until at least after trade week to see how the landscape changes.

hopefully we could trade simmo for at least a 3rd or 4th round pick.  at least he would come cheaper than hampson or jamar.  that may be the appeal for port.

I agree he is tradeable, I see us only keeping him as insurance for patto failing to make the grade.  If Port or St Kilda want him and are willing to trade a late 2nd round pick for him I'd take it.

Neither Simmonds or Pattison are long term answers. We might as well get what we can for Simmonds at this stage IMHO.

Connerly from Freo could be cheap.
Hampson from Carlton wouldnt be cheap but he has alot of potential
Griffen is unhappy at Adelaide

Id certainly be looking at getting 1 of the 3 to RFC this year and even a 2nd if its possible.

Do you mean Connolly ?

If so, he has been delisted off Freo's rookie list cos he is a perpetually injured hack.  Could not even get a game in WAFL 2nd's - really that bad.

I'm all for the youth policy, but in many ways I think we'd be better off trading Pattison for whatever we can get and keeping Simmonds.

Patto might still have some currency if clubs look at where he was taken. If we trade Simmonds and Pattison spends 12 months being exposed as the dreadful player he is as our no. 1 ruck option he will be untradeable.

Trade Pattison, take whatever pick we get and invest it in the best ruck available in the draft.

I agree getting rid of Pattison and Simmonds now is the best option, but we need to find replacements. Can we find them? And how much would they cost?

Reckon if you look at rucks who have been traded over the last few years some clubs have done pretty well.

King was pick 90
Gardiner was for exchanging 30-something for 40-something
Hudson was around pick 30
Warnock might be seen as expensive with pick 24 & 70ish but he could do a job for 7-8 years at the blues and it frees up Kreuzer.

Like I said, I just think we have to get the best out of this list and for Patto I reckon that means securing whatever we can get for a trade. If we got anything like pick 40 or 50 I'd be ecstatic. Even when we won the hitouts last season we'd get smashed in the clearances so if we need a stopgap ruck solution until we have the guys to win the stoppages I'm not bothered. Patto's not going to get any better though and is a mile off being a no. 1 ruck now.
