Harris heads to draft after career stalls at North
« on: October 17, 2009, 12:38:21 PM »
By Jennifer Witham
8:34 AM Sat 17 October, 2009FORMER Kangaroo Daniel Harris will nominate for next month's NAB AFL Draft in a bid to reignite a career that has stalled after 149 games with North Melbourne.

The Kangaroos were unable to find the 27-year-old midfielder a new home during trade week and are now poised to delist him.

But Harris holds no resentment towards his former lub and is focussed on starting anew with another team, according to his manager Liam Pikering.

"He's got no ill feeling whatsoever," Pickering told afl.com.au.

"He's a fantastic young bloke. He's just thankful for the opportunity North was able to give him for a number of years.

"He would have liked to have kept playing there, but that's just the way it goes."

Harris has kept training since the end of the Kangaroos' season in the hope he'll be thrown a lifeline at the November 26 draft.

Pickering said he was hopeful the midfielder would be considered by clubs looking to bolster their stocks of experienced players.

"He's going to be a better player than most of the players the clubs will pick up after selection 40," he said.

"It's whether a club will call his name out. He's 27, he's not injured, so I'd hope there would be a club that would be interested in him.

"He hasn't missed a game through injury since 2003 so body-wise, he's really good."

Pickering suggested Harris would be a good fit for clubs who are in the frame for a premiership in the next year or two.

Pickering agreed the shallower talent pool of youngsters on offer this year meant recycled players like Harris were more likely to receive a second chance.

"Hopefully, for those players' sakes, they get to the back end of the draft and clubs look at the list and think, 'we're just going to be taking a punt on a kid we may not rate that highly, and we know what this bloke can deliver'," he said.

Pickering said interest in Harris, who also attempted to a trade out of North Melbourne last year, had fluctuated.

"It's been a little bit quiet this week in general, but I've spoken to a lot of clubs and we're hopeful something might happen," he said.

"At this stage of the year, the clubs have had a pretty flat-out period so they've taken off for a few days.

"There's still six weeks until the national draft so once that gets closer, hopefully we'll get more of an indication on where we're at."

Harris will nominate for the December 15 NAB AFL Pre-season Draft if he fails to secure a new home next month.

Yeah, pretty much.  Why must you want every player that another team delists?  They're gone from the other team for a reason.

No I don't but do people like you want ANY experience in our team????????? We have just lost a wealth of football knowledge and experience with players like Johnson, Brown, Bowden and a few others and we are replacing them kids. I am not saying pick this guy up but whp do you suggest we pick up or do we leave the youth coming in to battle for themselves?????//

NO NO NO.

whats the point of having experience in your team when they cant play football.

We recruited Mclovin, Hislop and Thompson plus a host of others, well guess what pal they had experience, especially the former, and were also hacks.

Harris is a hack and that is being honest. He couldnt get a gig in a team like North now he wants to have a crack through the draft.

he is a very average footballer and id be very suprirsed if anyone picks him up, outside of Freo.

Fair enough actually regarding Harris, but we do need to pick someone up out of the PSD IMO IMO IMO, maybe Bradshaw or Ball.

Ball is going to Melbourne they have room in their salary cap. Would be very surprised if he slipped through to us. Next best player IMO is McDonald as he fits the age category by being only 25 so will complement the 22 and 23 yo coming through now, he played regular senior footy this year unlike Harris, can play off half back keeping his man down with good skills and will keep a bloke like McMahon at Coburg, not that I think McLovin is in Hardwicks plans. Yes he will cost us nothing in the PSD.

He has some experience but not overly experienced and will have room to grow with our developing squad. If Ball comes then good also as he can play too. Harris is a big no no, too slow and poor disposal and Bradshaw will keep a kid like Vickery or Post from a key position in the fwd line while he earns his superannuation. Bradshaw as I have said will be great for a club in a premiership window that will add 50 goals to their forward line not in a developing/ rebuilding  side like ours.

What do you mean "people like me"?  When have I gone on rants about 100% youth?  Try and think before you post.

Harris is a hack, plain and simple.  We should take a more experienced player (mid 20s, not 30ish) in the PSD.

Ball isn't going anywhere.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”
