Franklin was given Dermie's #23, Murphy and Gibbs didn't have a problem being given Fitzpatrick and Kernahan's numbers respectively, and  Dangerfield at the Crows looks a young gun wearing Ricciuto's #32.

Yeah but Buddy was given 23 in his 2ND year. I am pretty sure he started in No. 38 or something just like Roughead started in a high 30's number before being given number 2 in his 2nd year.

In Clarkson's first year as coach all the draftees were given high numbers in their first year  :thumbsup

I like the idea of having to earn a lower number. Seems that Hardwick is a real thinker and is trying to get into the heads of his players every moment of the day to change their psyche rather than having them just going through the motions. To give a player a number first up that has been worn previously by a club legend with distinction may imply to that player that he will become the type of player his predecessor was. Respect is earnt not a given. That's been our problem for too long we have demanded respect like favourable draws, blockbusters, Friday night games, fair and objectionable media coverage. You gotta earn it boys through success. Dimma's got the right attitude. It's the little things we have been lacking in that add up.

That's true WP in the Hawks' case. Hawthorn at the time had most of their early numbers taken. In 2004 every senior listed player had a number inside 40.

Now that I've checked it's interesting when Clarkson took over he didn't pass onto the new draftees any number guernsey inside 30. So obviously Hardwick is bringing this idea to Richmond from his time at Hawthorn. In fact the free guernsey numbers above 30 were handed out to the new draftees in numerical order corresponding to their draft order.

Hawthorn guernsey changes 2004 to 2005

4. Rayden Tallis
7. Luke McCabe    -------> Michael Osbourne (had #40 in 2004)
13. Lance Picioane
23. Nathan Thompson
33. Kris Barlow    --------> Josh Thurgood (promoted rookie - had #42 in 2004)
34. Mark Graham  --------> Bo Nixon (trade from Collingwood)
35. Adrian Cox -------------> Jarryd Roughead (ND pick 2)
38. Ben Clifton# ----------> Lance Franklin (ND pick 5)
40. Michael Osbourne -----> Jordan Lewis (ND pick 7)
41. Michael Rix# ----------> Thomas Murphy (ND pick 21)
42. Josh Thurgood# -------> Matt Little (ND pick 26)
43. Shaun Bergin# --------> Simon Taylor (ND pick 53)
44. Paul Shelton# ---------> Roury Kirkby# (rookie pick 2)
45.  --------------------------> Clinton Young# (rookie pick 18 )
46.  --------------------------> Thomas Willday# (rookie pick 34)
47.  --------------------------> Kristan Height# (rookie pick 48 )

I still think this is all mumbo jumbo but hey if it worked for Hawthorn on their way to a flag then I can't complain if Hardwick tries it with us.

Just taking this further we should be able to predict our new draftees' guernsey numbers.....

Our free guernseys

1. Kept free for Newy while he is captain and wearing 17.
4.
6. Polly will keep this?
7.
11.
12.
22.
36. ND pick 3 - Dustin Martin
38. ND pick 19
39. ND pick 35
42. ND pick 44
43. ND pick 51
44. ND pick 67
46. ND pick 71
47. PSD? ....... could be given #22 instead if it's an experienced recycled player?
then rookies depending on how many rookies we pick up (maximum of six more including Jamie O'Reilly)

The club has said guernseys 4, 7, 11 and 12 won't be used in 2010.

Richo's No.12 in mothballs (Age)

Richo's No.12 in mothballs
Caroline Wilson
November 26, 2009

RICHMOND will ask Matthew Richardson to select a successor to wear his famous No. 12 guernsey, but not until the jumper has been retired for at least a season.

The board's decision to remove No. 12 from the club's playing list is in line with the view new coach Damien Hardwick has brought to Tigerland. He said on the club's web site recently that younger players had to earn lower numbers.

Richardson, forced to retire two weeks ago due to injury, yesterday signed an agreement with the Seven Network to work as a commentator next season. His legacy at Richmond will be honoured with a public farewell at the Tigers' 2010 season-opener against Carlton.

Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale was unavailable for comment last night but said earlier this week the decision regarding Richardson's number and general legacy had to be ratified by the club's honours committee.

The widely held view among senior Tigers was that no player should wear No. 12 for at least one season and probably longer.

Joel Bowden's number will also be rested in 2010, along with the No. 7 worn by Nathan Brown.

The raft of youngsters to be taken by the club in tonight's national draft will all wear higher numbers in 2010, with the Richmond board determined to give Richardson, the club's symbolic hero of 1½ decades, the final say on No. 12.

Retiring Bowden's number 11 is a bit rich. If they don't want to see it in senior ranks in 2010 then maybe they should upgrade Jordy from 13 to 11.
Should be given to the player who gets to the contest then only proceeds to slowly back out of the contest or not go hard at it at all and gets cheap stats that do not take the side anywhere. Jordy clearly upholds these characteristics.

I can understand the Richo one as most would. :thumbsup

I know Joel wasn't every Tiger fan's favourite player (especially here lol) but he was dual club B&F winner and AA. Yeah sure he got a lot of uncontested possies that were cheap but it wasn't always his fault either that he had to play the role he was given. If Geisch and Spud had recruited young key defenders to take over from Gas and Chubba and we didn't recruit some many HBFers who couldn't kick then Joel wouldn't have played in defence for as long as he did. He was more a midsized forward/HFF. The game against Brisbane last year showed that when he offered a second marking option to Richo up forward in the last quarter and we kicked 8 goals to pinch the game.
