B&F Teams of the Decade
By Brett Anderson
Inside Football, Dec 09-Feb 10 edition

Inside Football based club teams of the decade on the top 10 voting in the B&F - the best guide to how a player performed in their opinion. To determine the best 22 they used a sliding scale. Each year the B&F winner received 10 votes, the runner-up nine, down to 10th placegetter who received one point. The decade's 22 top scorers were revealed and put into a team.

Richmond

In another decade to forget for the Tigers, Joel Bowden and Matthew Richardson stood out like beacons. Eight top-10 finishes between them coupled with three Jack Dyer Medals underlined their consistency. Despite the general lack of success, the Tigers' best 22 is still a most serviceable lline-up, however the fact that Ben Cousins came in at 23rd on the list after just one season at Punt Road highlights the lack of depth at Richmond since the turn of the decade.

Best 22 of the Decade:

B:   Mark Chaffey (11)        Darren Gaspar (29)         Andrew Kellaway (21)

HB: Chris Newman (28 )      Joel Bowden (57)          Daniel Jackson (9)

C:   Wayne Campbell (26)   Kane Johnson (35)        Leon Cameron (14)

HF: Brett Deledio (26)      Matthew Richardson (56)   Nathan Foley (18 )

F:   Nathan Brown (11)        Brad Ottens (18 )         Kayne Pettifer (11)

R:  Troy Simmonds (15)      Shane Tuck (30)           Mark Coughlan (24)

Int: Greg Tivendale (13), Andrew Raines (9), Matthew Knights (8 ), Richard Tambling (7)

Top 10 of the Decade:

1. Joel Bowden             57
2. Matthew Richardson   56
3. Kane Johnson            35
4. Shane Tuck               30
5. Darren Gaspar           29
6. Chris Newman           28
7. Wayne Campbell       26
7. Brett Deledio            26

To get a true indication shouldn't they then divided by the number of years each player was on the list in this decade eg. Richo 56/10 =5.6, bling 15/5=3

It is a worry when your team of the decade probably wouldn't make the finals.

Sometimes there are hidden messages within writings. This says that the article was written by a drunk who has never seen a game of football and is  published for novelty value only.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,

I think it was done on B&F votes so Andrew Raines was top 22 B&F votes 2000-2009.

Shows how ordinary our recruiting has been over the decade when just one Tiger who was drafted as a kid (not recycled) post-2000 makes the top 10.

Looking at this "best of the decade side" one year on and it's no surprise we're sadly coming up to 10 years without finals  :(. A mixture mostly of older players on the wrong side of their prime who had only a good year or two, players cut down by injury in their prime (Browny, Cogs, Foley) and others who should be nowhere near a best of a decade list  :P. Hopefully with a large group of youngsters now coming through and developing together we'll finally end up with a side that finally represents finals appearances and success over the upcoming decade  :pray.

I think the better question to ask is who out of that team would you like to have included to our current list?

Excluding the current players in the team I would have a young and fit Richo, Brown, Ottens, Simmonds and maybe Knights. The rest I think we will have better options of when our current players develop.

I wonder how many of our current list will end up on our side of the next decade?

Right now, I'd like to think Jack, Dusty, Cotch and Lids would be in that side providing they remain at the club and maintain current form.
It could mean some real success if Titch, Astbury, Griffiths, Morton and maybe Vickery wound up in it as well.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
