Laying Low
« on: January 20, 2010, 12:33:50 PM »
Ok, so everyone is aware that we have had a very... very low key pre-season regarding media.

I for one think this has probably been our best pre-season approach since I can remember, albeit frustrating for us hard core supporters that wan't to know what is happening at the club every minute of the day.... :)

I believe it has given the players time to concentrate on the new game plan and develop their skills further without the hindrance of being surrounded by media every training session. I also think by being low key the coaches and coaching staff have had the chance to find their feet unlike it was when Terry came in hosting Tuesdays and just about every other days with Terry.

I have also noticed that the Hawks have had the same approach to date, really I have heard very little about anything that club has been doing for the pre season and interesting that Hardwick came from that culture.

I really cant think of any other clubs that have taken the low key approach or clubs that have not been exposed to the usual media hype for this time of year??

What are peoples thoughts about the approach we have taken and the the similarities between us and the Hawks given where Hardwick came from?

Not much worth saying when you're likely going to finish last.

What if we don't MM, what happens if Hardwick goes in and gets Coach of the year, look what happened at the Crows when Craig went in during his first year. Look what happened with Clarkson, look what happened when Roos took over the Swans, even when Ratten went to Carlton.

Never say never and I think most of those teams/coaches I have mentioned above other than Carlton were pretty low key during their first year.

Mclovin, Edwards, Connors, King, Thompson, Hislop are just some names that Ratten and Roos didnt have at their disposal.

Until they are all gone we wont make finals

I dont think that there was that much "hullabaloo" going into season 2008 from memory.

I dont think its rocket science. When you are comming off an ordinary season theres not much you can do except :

1. Shut up
2. Be humble
3. Work your tail off in preperation for next season.

I don't understand how saying nothing helps a clubs pre season. Mind you, I don't think talking up a big game does much either.

If the coaches and players fulfil their pledge of taking no shortcuts and being relentless with regard to practice and learning a simplified, defensive game plan, it will help.
Being low key is totally irelevant.

You make some good points but just a question Yellow & Black, you say that being low key is irelevant however on the other hand do you think last years hype was detrimental to our seasons preperations or positive? IMO more focus can be placed where it should be this year instead of performing and playing up for the cameras at training.

I think being low key is more positive than irelevant..... IMO.

While I'm glad we as a club are finally keep our mouth shut, I hope it is being done because we have nothing to say after finishing 15th rather than as an attempt to protect the playing group from any expectations. Eventually when this list matures they are going to have to deal with and perform under the weight of huge expectations if we are going to get out of this 30 year rut. A playing group that wants to play, thrive and win on the big stage in the big games. :wallywink

And I thought we were laying low cos the whole squad sleeps on the floor now lol.

Hardwick is pushing the right buttons off the field whilst working feverishly to get it right on the field. Me thinks he's no frills and if success is embraces it will be done so in a respectful and humble way. :thumbsup

do you think we wouldve finished higher on the ladder had we avoided the media and kept a low profile?
This probably wouldve also forced us to overlook Cuz.

Actually heard Benny Gale on Sport 927 last week and he was asked about whether the club was deliberately keeping a low profile.

He said that they have made themselves available to media for anything. Said that any and ALL media requests had been met. Then went onto to say that media are not focusing on us this pre-season, therefore less media requests and as a result it would appear that we are keeping a low profile when we aren't really

I actually agree with this - the media aren't interested in us, therefore we aren't in the papers. After last years debacle we dont' deserve to be. Expectations for the Tigers is low so the less media the better IMHO ;D

Makes a lot of sense to me. Can't see why we would be deliberately laying low when publicity can mean added memebrships.
