Someone apart from Jack and Mitch needs to be able to kick a bag. Can't rely on them all the time. If they are going to play Polak up forward he has got to kick at the very least a couple a game and we need a small forward like Nahas to kick 2 or 3 a game to be really competitive. We need to kick regularly 16 to 18 goals a game. Perhaps play Brett more in the forward line. He is a good mark and good kick. What do people think?

Barry Hall..Brendan Fevola..Daniel Bradshaw..(where's the old man emoticon?)

Time for JAAAAAACK to put his money where his mouth is.
jack will have his work cut out unless he gets some real help.
you can just see it now thornton and jamison double teaming jack and bower cleaning up and running of polak.i would not be expecting to much from our tall forwards.

Forward line isn't ready yet. By the end of the year everyone will be raving about the Reiwoldt, Astbury, Griffiths trio and the several crumbers we have up forward. But for now we'll be hoping Polak can do his job

i agree, hopefully they play together soon!

but ... Riewoldt, Morton, Nahas, Roberts, Taylor , Astbury, Griffiths, Polak, Post, Tambling, Deledio, Cotchin, Hislop, Nason - that is who will kick our Goals in 2010!

Overall -  :pray

The Blues will give our small forward line little room to lead and move through. Polak will be vital in this game as he will need to smash the packs and bring the ball to ground at all costs as the Blues will flood our back line and run it out continuously. They will aim to first pressure our midfield into kicking it long to a crowded F50 and set up their running backs to counter attack catching us (and our zone - especially midfielderd) off guard and our midfielders no time to move into their backline allowing their forwards space to lead into. This will kill us both offensively and defensively unless we can find targets up forward or our crumbers can swoop on the ball around the packs.

We need to ensure that we have all our forward options spreading and working together to create space and targets for our midfielders to find. The less predictable we can be the better.

As always this will be a battle of the midfields who will need to kick more than a few themselves if we are any chance to win. Both forwardlines will only look reasonable if their midfield can win through the middle and help them look that way.

Interestingly we will have the best and most dangerous forward on the ground playing for us .... Jack Riewoldt

I expect him to be double and triple teamed all night, but I also expect him to be the best KP forward on the ground.

As long as we can keep them to under 50 inside 50s for the game we are a good chance of winning this match, its a big if though, they have much more midfield depth than we have ATM, and our midfielders are apart from lids ( Jacko, Cuz Chimp, Thomson) are all underdone. Will be a fascinating contest, interesting to see Dimma on his debut matching his wits against Ratten. Hopefully Ratten is exposed for the intellectual lightweight that he is.

Richardson: Tigers will move on

Paul Gough
Sportal

"I think there is some great talent in the forward line now," Richardson said.

"You have got Jack Riewoldt who is into his fourth year and Mitch Morton who kicked 40-odd goals last year and will be better again and we saw little bits of Jayden Post last year."

"And they have recruited a couple of taller guys in last year's draft such as Dave Astbury, who looked athletic and moved well in the pre-season, and then you have got Robin Nahas as your small forward and he was our best first-year player last year so I think there is some real talent there to work on."

Richo is a loss but is not a loss either if we are only comparing ourselves to last year. Richo was injured for most of the season and he only played in one win which was against North where he was allowed back on hurt ::) and plonked up forward.

Last year we only had 5 Tigers crack double figures and one of them was Browny (16) who's retired.
Mitch   41
Jack    32
Nahas 26
Lids    20

I can't see Polly kicking too many this year. Is more being played as a dummy big key forward to take the opposition's best/biggest defender freeing up Jack and Mitch. The only way we'll kick 14+ goals needed to win the game will be 7 to 8 other tigers chipping in with 1-2 goals each which means our midfielders ad HFFers will need to push inside 50 at times.

Unfortunately we will have to bide our time for a couple of years until Griffiths, Astbury and contributions from Postie and Vickery all mature and fill out and add to a currently very light big man firepower.

Hard tags on Murphy and Gibbs should slow down there forward forays. Farmer on Betts. Id also like to see Newman go into the midfield to add some more experience leadership and run. Forward line- Nahas Roberts Morton Cousins Riewoldt Polak. Roberts may cause some confusion in the Blues defence, we need a cool head who can take advantage- Cousins and Cotchin switching in this role between midfield and forward line is perfect. We are one tall forward short because Im not expecting much from  Polak but In a crisis Simmonds can go to Full Forward and Vickery or another ruckman can go and ruck.

Richmond Tigers' forward thinking

   * Jon Ralph
   * Herald Sun
   * March 25, 2010

TERRY Wallace is gone from Punt Rd, but clearly he learnt plenty during his three decades of elite football.

Planning for the AR Era - "After Richo" - needed to start long before everyone's favourite Tiger pulled the pin and, while credit is in short supply for former coach Wallace, the legacy of his five years is to be found in Richmond's new-look forward line.

Its formation can be traced back to April 13, 2008, when Wallace pushed Matthew Richardson on to a wing against Fremantle to allow the younger brigade to shine.

"We're so used to going to Matthew," Wallace said after the Tigers had won by 64 points at Subiaco Oval.

"We've got to find out whether we've got key-position players who can hold down positions for the future of the footy club."

Since that day many players have tried and failed to establish themselves as key forwards at Richmond.

Cleve Hughes and Jay Schulz have left and Graham Polak's tram accident delayed his emergence, but it is certainly worth working with the players who remain.

Jack Riewoldt (pick 13), Ben Griffiths (19), Jayden Post (26), David Astbury (35) and Troy Taylor (51) were all acquired through the draft as tall targets.

And the Tigers have traded for Mitch Morton (from West Coast for No. 35), and elevated rookies Robin Nahas and Relton Roberts.

With Riewoldt (32 goals, 27 behinds in 2009) a legitimate attacking target and Morton (41.26) a genuine combination of lead-up forward and goalsneak, they have some quality building blocks.

"The younger guys really have an opportunity to step up," Tigers captain Chris Newman said.

"Jack Riewoldt is one that can take that next step. Graham Polak looks really good down there and we have a lot of nippy guys around the scenes - Mitch Morton and Robbie Nahas.

"It's an exciting forward line. We just need to give them an opportunity to be able to kick the goals."

The X-factors will be Taylor, described as an exciting prospect, and Roberts.

"They are two guys who can really come in and make an impact," Newman said. "They really pride themselves on their forward pressure, which is a good starting point."

But can Riewoldt play the crash-and-bash role, creating crumbs for Nahas, Roberts and company?

"I think Riewoldt probably can," Newman said.

"But we (also) have David Astbury coming through and big Griffiths. They both have really good attitudes and they are keen to learn. I think they can all come in and play their role."

Richardson said yesterday Richmond fans had to realise the new-look forward line would not jell instantly.

"It takes time as a key forward," he said. "It's a tough position and it's getting harder and harder as it goes by. Mitch Morton was good last year and he will get better again. Jack is into his fourth year and each year he has taken a step.

"Post showed some good signs last year. He is a really good mark but just needs to develop some explosive speed. There is some good talent down there."

Now comes the boring part - the waiting. Like the next flag, it will take time, but the cupboard is not as bare as some pundits imagine.

Hardwick spoke about this today......

Hardwick said the Tigers were functioning well in some areas but kicking a winning score, or developing the players to do so, might take some time.

“You look at the game on the weekend [and] we had the same amount of inside-50 entries, our clearances were good, our [number of] turnovers were good … thing is and we always knew our forward line was going to be the last thing to develop,” he said.

“We’re asking Jack Riewoldt and Mitch Morton to play against gorillas. In all honesty they’re third and fourth [string] forwards as compared to ones and twos.

“But we’ve got a couple of guys that can come and fulfil that role but it’s going to take some time. You look at [Ben] Griffiths and [David] Astbury out there and they are big, big men or they are going to be big, big men, it’s just going to take some time to get that.

“So for us, although the scoreboard said we went down by 55 points, there were some positives in the fact that we were getting the ball inside 50 for starters, we won the clearances and we won the turnovers.”
