Richmond discussion on 3aw tonight
« on: April 08, 2010, 06:29:00 PM »
King admitted when he was at Punt Rd we didn't get the development out of our kids as other clubs did. Other club's kids would come along quicker.

Russell asked if Wallace erred by not cleaning out the list from the start a la Hawthorn and instead tried to be competitive and win straight away while rebuilding like a Sydney? King said Richmond has made a few errors over the years. Hard to individualise. Hawthorn also had Hodge, Mitchell and a number of 20 year olds already there which Richmond didn't.

A caller rang in asking why Richmond had an inversion to recruiting guys 6' 4". King said Richmond has drafted a few talls over the past two drafts (Griffiths, Astbury, Vickery) but they are probably just a bit away from playing as yet.

Not surprised by Patto's axing. He hadn't done much and players still need to be held accountable.

Healy and Russell questioned why a club like Richmond that has continually made errors recruiting should get more early picks. Healy said if Richmond had picked up Pavlich and Franklin instead no way would they be in the state they find themselves now.

Jake Niall on 3aw

Niall rates Lids, cotch, Martin with Vickery and Post as question marks who have shown ability.

Only 100+ gamers who are playing in the side - Newy, Lids (just over 100), Simmo (near retirement).

Other 4 100+ gamers - Jordie, Cousins, Polak, Tuck - none of these have the capacity to win Richmond games apart from Cuz.

David King argued that we don't know how much development is left in the young guys. The youngsters development may be fast-tracked under Hardwick. That's his difference in argument with Niall.

David King in response to a caller said yes he takes some responsibility from his time at Punt Rd.

Niall argued we've tried very hard in the 2 games so far but our kicking skills are so diabolical we are simply uncompetitive.

Niall said pick 4 is more like pick 7 with no 17 year olds in the draft. Richmond won't be getting the same help from the draft other bottom clubs have had in the past. That's his point.

Russell said what stopped Richmond picking up Barlow. Not picking up Franklin. They are their own worst enemy.

Niall said Richmond supporters would like his idea. The AFL should a great institution like Richmond and their supporters have suffered 25 years of pain and only had 5 mins of sunshine.

Niall isn't asking for special consideration for Richmond. Just fair consideration on par with previous bottom sides.

King said a club can't go to the AFL and say we stuffed up our recruiting so help us out. Action would have to come from the AFL.

Niall responded Richmond may just have to as the AFL won't just act.

Russell said it will be hypocritical for Gale to go to AFL about this after saying Richmond would make the finals in 3 of the next 5 years.

Healy read out our first round picks from the past 5 drafts - Lids (1), Tambo (4), Meyer (12), Patto (16), JON (8 ), Riewoldt (13), Cotchin (2), Vickery (8 ) and Martin (3).

Healy is asking callers if Richmond will win a flag in the next 10 years or are they simply a basketcase?

a bit more....

Healy said the Tigers need more Martins. Need to keep Martin, Cotchin and Lids together as potential A-graders.

Russell said Richmond need more than an A-grader. They need an A+ grader who can win a Brownlow like a Nick Riewoldt.

Healy said that's the problem Richmond don't have a big forward target. You can keep adding mids all you like but you need a quality forward.

King said that's why Jack Riewoldt is very important to them. He reckons we're okay in defence. Some good young defenders. Just need to add some ballcarriers in defence with good footskills.

No surprise our player development was much poorer than other clubs when our draftees went without a development coach for their first 3 years  :P.

I'd like to know how us going to the AFL seeking draft compo would make Benny Gale hypocritical. If it helps us get to 3 finals in 5 years then it'll be thumbs up for Gale.

I firmly believe we deserve compensation, not based on our poor recruiting but based on equality with other clubs that have finished in the same position as us over the years, like the Dees and Blues.

Personally the only thing we may be able to get is access to 1 - 16 yo this year - thatll just about be it. And we'll get it because every other club who was in our position has got priority picks, so the AFL needing to be seen to be doing something will give us access I reckon.

What about a future draft pick like pick 1 2012?

It would be equivalent to selecting a 16 year old this year but with more certainty waiting the 2 years to see which 18 year old is the best.

Totally agree, i very much doubt the afl will step in and help us out with on field problems. sadly we have bottomed out at the worse time.

not sure I buy that ol doozie MT that would be letting the likes of Royal, King McCrae and later Campbell right off the hook, call them what you will , ultimately ALL the coaches are accountable for the development of players... :

Any Richmond member that has an unbroken stint of being a member between 2000-2009 ie the tenures of Spud Frawley and Terry Wallet should be able to band together and get a class action law suit against those two fwits for leaving the club in the state it is currently in.

In other words not a hope in the aforementioned happenning and the AFL won't be issuing handouts to a club in the football heartland when all they want to do in ensure a club will succeed in the Rugby heartland. Suck it up and prey that these youngsters we have on our list come through.

Here's my take on it, whilst we genuinely struggled with mediocrity, and played honest football with an eye to winning each game, we still came up short, but...we were robbed by blatant tanking tactics of clubs like carlton and melbourne.  Melbourne makes me angry because  u watch them play Collingwood like a top 4 contender and think....bs..u bastards tanked..we really needed help.  The other point is that if we are struggling then we are just entitled as those clubs to priority picks etc, and given that they cheated the system, and us..more so..
What right has the AFL to apply the rules to some clubs but not ours?  Our club is entitled to equal treatment to remain competitive.  We have already been disadvantaged by a rule change once with the stupid win less than 5 games BS that let Carlton winning the Kruezer cup etc.  We should of kicked up a stink about that for a start.  If it was Collingwood, Eddie would of been on every newspaper, radio station and his fat neck would of been wobbling on channel nine as he whined his way through his grievance.  The BIG problem I see though is this...apparently every club had agree to the conditions of these new clubs coming in ?  Correct me if I am wrong if anyone has better info.  Anyway, I hope something can be done, because, we really are in a bit of strife and a really poo time.  I cannot fathom how we timed it so well when we knew it was coming....

Would they Healy? Kingy said that we couldn't develop kids.
