------------------------------------------------------------

RICHMOND'S horror start to 2010 has continued with a 55-point thumping at the hands of the rampant Sydney Swans at the SCG on Saturday night.

Daniel Bradshaw finished with four goals, including his 500th career major, as the Swans won 16.15 (111) to 7.14 (56).

It was the Swans' eighth consecutive win against Richmond, extending a streak that stretches back to round 14, 2005 when the Tigers prevailed by a solitary point at the MCG.

That illustrious occasion was a distant memory on Saturday night as the Swans enjoyed a near-complete domination of their struggling opponents in the first half.

They booted the first nine goals of the game to lead by 54 points before Shane Edwards broke the Tigers' drought midway through the second quarter.

Richmond put up a brief fight in the third term, slotting three consecutive majors to stem the tide but it was a short-lived renaissance.

Only the Swans' inaccuracy - three goals from 10 shots - spared the Tigers further pain in that quarter.

They held Richmond at arm's length in a lacklustre final term, in which injury was added to the Tigers' insult when youngster Relton Roberts was knocked unconscious and carried from the field.

Bradshaw looks set to thrive in the tight confines of the SCG while Ben McGlynn (three goals) backed up his five-goal haul against Adelaide with another fine game across half forward.

Jude Bolton was outstanding around the clearances, Kieren Jack was excellent in his 50th game and Heath Grundy continued to excel at centre half-back.

First-year Tiger Dustin Martin showed up his more experienced teammates with a superb game in midfield, while Edwards and Daniel Jackson were also among the few visitors to shine.

In contrast, Brownlow Medallist Ben Cousins was blanketed from the opening moments of the game by Marty Mattner and failed to have exert any influence.

The Swans travel to Etihad Stadium to face North Melbourne in round four while Richmond returns to the MCG to take on Melbourne.

Swans smash sorry Tigers

SYDNEY moved into the AFL's top eight and further increased Damien Hardwick's woes with a 55-point stroll past a ragged Richmond outfit at the SCG.

Daniel Bradshaw led the way for the Swans with four goals, including the 500th of his career, as the Swans prevailed 16.15 (111) to 7.14 (56) for their second straight win following a narrow opening-round loss to St Kilda.

But it was a terrible night for the young win-less Richmond side, who took almost 50 minutes to kick their first goal to emphasise the task facing first-year coach Hardwick at Tigerland.

It is Sydney's eighth straight win over Richmond, equalling a record set way back between 1915-1919, with the Tigers now failing to defeat the Swans since 2005.

The home side dominated all aspects and were never tested, with the likes of Nick Malceski, Jude Bolton, Jarrad McVeigh, Heath Grundy and Ben McGlynn all standing out.

It was a very different story for Richmond, who will spend a week under the spotlight before next Sunday's clash with fellow strugglers Melbourne.

Youngster Dustin Martin toiled hard and finished with 22 touches, while Daniel Jackson and Ben Nason showed plenty of endeavour but lacked the polish to hurt Sydney.

Ben Cousins finished with 13 possessions and had little impact on his return to the side.

The game was over as a contest as early as the first term, when the Swans kicked 6.4 to four Richmond behinds.

Sydney appeared to have extra men all over the ground and had little trouble regularly finding open targets in a match that resembled a half-paced midweek training run.

Bradshaw impressed as he continues to settle into Sydney's forward line, kicking the opening goal to bring up 500 for his career, 496 of which came as a Brisbane Lion.

The Swans' new spearhead showed some encouraging mobility as he gets back to full fitness following a pre-season knee injury.

Sydney will aim for a third straight win when they travel to Etihad Stadium to take on the Kangaroos next Saturday, while Richmond will be desperate for their first win when they clash with the Demons at the MCG.

Swans too classy for Tiger cubs
DAVID SYGALL, SYDNEY
April 11, 2010

SOMETIMES it looked like a training run. Sometimes they resembled the Harlem Globetrotters. And, certainly, there was plenty of hard footy. But in the end, it was a comprehensive win for Sydney, which disposed of a committed - but outclassed - Richmond last night.

Led by four goals to star recruit Daniel Bradshaw and three to Ben McGlynn, the Swans produced a sleek and measured performance and, despite being pressured in the second half, were never genuinely threatened by the young Tigers, whose poor start to the season continues.

Former Eagles star Ben Cousins huffed and puffed for the visitors, but the Swans blew his house down, effectively securing the four premiership points by the end of the first quarter. When Cousins did get near the ball, he was smothered by Martin Mattner, allowing other Swans to take starring roles, including Kieren Jack, McGlynn and Heath Grundy, who were among their best.

In a blistering first term the Swans raced to a six-goal lead, featuring five separate goal-scorers. They continued the momentum in the second, adding another 26 points, against Richmond's one goal for the entire half, to go to the main break 52 points clear.

Richmond was the only team yet to have won a quarter this season, but it put up an admirable fight in the third term to try to rectify that statistic. It came up short, 25 to 20, but commendably, did manage to win the final quarter by two points.

Early on, it had looked as though the Swans were on track for their first 100-plus-point win since 2001, but they slipped a notch late in the match, nevertheless buoyed by a performance that sets them up for tougher assignments.

Before last night, the Swans had won their previous seven games against Richmond, including four at the SCG and four by 50 points or more. Last night's win equalled the club's longest sequence of victories against the Tigers - eight between 1915 and 1919.

The Swans pulled away immediately last night, with two recruits, former Lion Bradshaw and former Hawk McGlynn, scoring the opening majors. Bradshaw's was his 500th in the AFL.

Over the next 10 minutes, Ryan O'Keefe and Josh Kennedy added to the early belting and Bradshaw kicked another and, though the Tigers briefly were able to match the Swans' physicality midway through the term, they fell further behind when Jack, celebrating his 50th match, received a free kick and goaled to finish off the quarter.

Whatever good work Richmond's midfielders were doing was undone by poor service to their forward line. For the Swans, it was the opposite, with nice movement into forwards who seemed to have too much space and time.

Jarred Moore became the sixth goal-scorer and, in the lead-up to McGlynn's second, the Swans started throwing no-look and behind-the-head handballs.

Shane Mumford kicked his first goal for the Swans in the 19th minute of the second term to put them out by nine goals, before Richmond finally registered a six-pointer through Shane Edwards three minutes later.

Jude Bolton's fine second quarter was marked by a goal in the closing stages and the Swans went to the break ahead by 52 points.

Major contributors included Nick Malceski, McGlynn and Jarrad McVeigh, while Dustin Martin and Jack Riewoldt were Richmond's best.

The Swans had 208 disposals to Richmond's 152 in the first half, including 129 kicks to 82.

The Tigers' fine third-quarter effort was headed by goals to Troy Simmonds, Riewoldt and Ben Nason and they were leading the term until Bradshaw kicked his second of the term to add to Malceski's earlier goal.

In the final term, the Tigers continued the fight, but had little to show for it, other than a Brett Deledio goal, owing primarily to poor kicking at the big sticks.

There was concern for Relton Roberts, who was taken off on a stretcher in a neck brace after a heavy collision with Grundy.

Late in the match, Cousins had his only set shot at goal, receiving a loud boo from the crowd as he ran in, but his kick fell short.

The Swans passed 100 points with a McGlynn goal in the dying minutes.

Best -
Sydney: Jack, Grundy, McGlynn, J Bolton, Mattner, Malceski.
Richmond: Martin, Riewoldt, Edwards, Jackson, Nason.

Actually thought Edwards was alright

You talk about needing to cull more and some players not being up to AFL standard - I put him in the same class as McMahon, except McMahon makes less mistakes and can kick.  He makes bad skill and judgment mistakes in every single game he plays and he has been around long enough for me to know without any shadow of a doubt that he is not good enough.  Don't ever want to see him in our jumper again quite frankly, he is not our future.
