Every associates higher draft picks with better players..
Imagine if we won less games than Melbourne and picked up Tom Scully who the media rammed down our throats was the best player in the draft.
Toms struggiling a little but it's very early days. Unfortunatly the heat will turn up soon unless he has a break in the 2s. Imagine if he was at Richmond instead of Dusty who we overlooked. I can see the backpages as we speak.. But being Melbourne nothing will be said. Don't get me wrong Tom can play and will be a super player but not being at Richmond means he won't cop the 'is he another failed pick' tag which can only further hinder development.
I say this is I firmly believe half the battle for new players is the media exposure and magnified lime light on individuals. If Tom was at Richmond he'd be under a fair bit of pressure because as number 1 he has to be better than everyone in the draft or Richmond will have failed..
We can all whinge about the media and how they treat our club and players etc. But were also partly to blame. Sure some of our current players aren't superstars but players like Edwards, Rance even Post have their fair share of knockers. None of this helps development and certainly doesn't fast track it. There will always be negative feedback for players not playing well but we can all admit our expectations of players have always been high..(too high)
So this Saturday go along support the yellow and black don't get too hung up about the result and enjoy seeing sone genuine youth hopefully gel. If one of the younger guys turn it over or give a free kick away maybe think twice about ringing up a radio station or posting on a forum about how bad they are etc. Give them time and lots of it.
