If we had Scully instead Martin?
« on: April 16, 2010, 09:12:47 AM »
Every associates higher draft picks with better players..
Imagine if we won less games than Melbourne and picked up Tom Scully who the media rammed down our throats was the best player in the draft.
Toms struggiling a little but it's very early days. Unfortunatly the heat will turn up soon unless he has a break in the 2s. Imagine if he was at Richmond instead of Dusty who we overlooked. I can see the backpages as we speak.. But being Melbourne nothing will be said. Don't get me wrong Tom can play and will be a super player but not being at Richmond means he won't cop the 'is he another failed pick' tag which can only further hinder development.

I say this is I firmly believe half the battle for new players is the media exposure and magnified lime light on individuals. If Tom was at Richmond he'd be under a fair bit of pressure because as number 1 he has to be better than everyone in the draft or Richmond will have failed..

We can all whinge about the media and how they treat our club and players etc. But were also partly to blame. Sure some of our current players aren't superstars but players like Edwards, Rance even Post have their fair share of knockers. None of this helps development and certainly doesn't fast track it. There will always be negative feedback for players not playing well but we can all admit our expectations of players have always been high..(too high)

So this Saturday go along support the yellow and black don't get too hung up about the result and enjoy seeing sone genuine youth hopefully gel. If one of the younger guys turn it over or give a free kick away maybe think twice about ringing up a radio station or posting on a forum about how bad they are etc. Give them time and lots of it.

I think the thing with Martin is he is built to step right into AFL football, a very rare commodity indeed. Out of Scully, Trengove and him, he was the best pick for Richmond because of this, IMHO. As for who the best pick will be only time will tell. It could be the other two have more development left in them than Martin, or he could turn out to be a once a generation footballer.

Personally I find the comparing of draft picks a bit tiresome, after all there were four players taken before Franklin (Even Whorethorn rated Roughhead ahead of him)

Couldn't agree more, unfortunately it wont happen. Even when we win  ;D there will be some saying "Melbourne lost", "we were lucky", "we wouldnt have beaten any one else" or similar negative crap.

Spot on pope, I think the thing is "As in the Raines issue" - We do have some good players that if slotted into a sucessful team would get the credit they deserve and reach the potential they possess.
Think/Hope with us, we can develop these kids and turn into a team where some of these guys can flourish and show the football world how good they can actually be,  while still at the Tigers.
Gunna be a nice day, gunna try and enjoy it and maybe, just maybe the Tigers can make it all that much nicer  :gotigers

Talk about getting bagged by the mediots. Going to the dentist yesterday had sen on just after 2 and matt thompson opens up with "someone should tell Richmond not to tank" due to gc17 comming in, then goes on about how Tiger supporters  must be so p---ed off that Rodan is doing so well at port??? and that going to see the Tiges play is like seeing a TAC side. We got a positive from the Ox after 4pm saying that if there was 1 club that he would have wanted to play for it would have been the Tiges.

Good post, wouldn't be sursprised if the club were ecstatic with Martin for this very reason.

Also, I think there is naturally less pressure when you go to a battling club as one of two gun youngsters than when you go to a struggling club as the only messiah. Out of the three Martin looked the most capable of doing on his own due to the fact he is a ready made senior footballer.

Both good players.  Let's not start a decade long beat up of ourselves a la the Frankling/Tambo thing.   Life is too short.

Personally I wouldn't trade Martin for Scully or Trengove, I'm very happy with what we have got.

RFC copped heaps for picking Tambling over Franklin when as noted before we were not the only ones. Itstill gets bought up from time to time.
What i would like to know is when Melbourne are going to start getting the same crap when the pick Jack Watts who hasnt played a game over Nic Naitanui who all the comentators and media a salivating over.

Exactly, if the RFC had done that we would have been bagged to the hills half way thorugh last season
