Kelly can feel Tigers’ pain
By Luke Holmesby
Mon 03 May, 2010

GEELONG star James Kelly says he understands the pain that Richmond is going through after his side defeated the Tigers by 108 points at Skilled Stadium on Sunday.

Kelly, who was one of Geelong’s best in the annihilation, says part of the reason for the Cats’ current success is the character built from some heavy losses early in his career.

“We’ve been in the same position, we were a talented list a few years ago and weren’t performing and we were copping it,” Kelly said after the game.

“You sort of understand, they’ve just got to ride it out, they’ve got a couple of really good kids and they should come up eventually.”

Kelly arrived at Geelong in the 2001 National Draft with fellow premiership players Jimmy Bartel, Gary Ablett and Steven Johnson and said the key to developing a young side was to be honest with one another.

“They’ve got to work on their games and be really hard on each other," Kelly said. "That’s the thing, as a group when we first got here we had Joel Corey and Cameron Ling, Corey Enright and Chappy ahead of us.

“They were really good trainers and taught us how to train the right way.

"You can spend a lot of time going through the motions but they’ve got to be really disciplined and hard on each other so they get the best out of each other.”

Yeah jack, was going to say I don't think the cats have ever been this bad.

They always brag that they've never had a draft pick lower than 6.
And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do

The cats as far as I remember never finished lower than 12th and their % was at worst around 90. They were always competitivie.

The whole bottoming out thing is a myth. Apart from Hawthorn, no one bottoms out and hits rock bottom then rebounds to the top - and look at how lasting the Hawks success has been.

The Saints did.

The Saints still had the likes of Harvey, Burke, Loewe, Spider, Wakelin brothers, some of them grand final players. Must be one of the best poor sides of all-time. Then they ran into a couple of very good drafts.

And despite having the most 'talented' list, they've always failed at the final hurdle, all through the 00's. They are the exception that proves the rule that bottoming out doesn't work.

I knew James Kelly was a good guy.  He's doing well for me in Dreamteam.  ;)

Pies did in 99 and 00 and played in the Grannie in 02...bulldogs did in 03 and 04...have played in the prelim 08 and 09...

Carlton 3 years on the bottom then played finals last year....

Geelong didn't, Swans didn't, Port didn't have a sustained period of failure, Brisbane had 1 wooden spoon season between finals appearances in about 98 or 99 which must have been a rude awakening.

Bottoming out for mulitple years doesn't win premierships - the only exception is Hawthorn and they are falling again.

Even West Coast only had one really ordinary year and never finished bottom 2 AFAIK. They got lucky with that strong draft and getting Judd at 3. Building sustained success is about good recruiting around a decent core, not bottoming out.

That's the sad thing. This crop of Richmond players will not be part of a successful Richmond side that pushes for finals whilst they are in their prime. The best we can hope is that we get out of this lot our B. Johnson/R. Smith/S. West/C. Grant or our R. Harvey/N. Burke/S. Loewe/N. Winmar out of them to serve as the core and hardened leadership of a good young team down the track. Its a two-generation process now and at least 10 years of hard work and good recruitment away

Doesn't that just highlight how a strong few older players means nothing when the rest of your players are kids, we don't even have the strong core of older players.

As for those very good drafts, Goddard was a massive underachiever until moved to the half back flank, he's only just come good in the past couple of years. Ball was crippled by injuriesm is not gone for nothing and hasn't improved much at Collingwood. Kosi is useless and I'll put money on him being at Gold Coast next year. They traded brilliantly to get extra early picks in those strong drafts and other than Riewoldt, it's those mid-1st round picks that have made that side what it is today.

Geelong's last 100 point loss was in round 3 1998 to Sydney at the SCG. Lost 160-57.

Since then we have lost by 100 points

once in 2000
three in 2006
once in 2007
once so far this year.

Lost by over 10 goals 32 times since round 3 1998.

Says alot about our list nonetheless. Very stark statistic on the type of club we have been......

At their lowest they were still building around Hocking, Sholl, Mensch, McGrath, Riccardi, Kilpatrick. Tough solid players.

James could onlly feel the Tigers pain because one of the cats accidentally slipped the salami into him instead of one of our petite little girly boys.
