We have 20 gameplan rules
« on: May 22, 2010, 06:45:04 PM »
Leppitsch on 3aw just now.....

* Competitive signs last couple of weeks. Let's hope we continue that trend tonight.

* 3aw saw us doing some rugby tackling drills. Leppitsch said we've been doing that over the past month. Leppitsch also said we've been doing technique work with our tackling.

* Richo said our kicking efficiency and tackling has improved the past two weeks. Leppitsch replied that's all about our ball movement. As our ball movement improves we will have more time and space to execute. The ball movement is still a fair way off.

* Richo asked who is tagging Watson with Jacko out but leppa wouldn't give an answer.

* Leppa impressed by Mitch Farmer. Said he was consistent without being outstanding. On the other hand Martin has showed the flashes of class. Tiger fans should be looking forward to see Griffiths come into the side as well.

* Nason - Leppa said he's never seen a workload like it when Nason was measured by GPS.

* Connolly said the spirit has been good even despite the few hidings. Leppa said we've got a good gameplan but it's going to take time to learn. There's 10 elements on offence/defence plus 10 team rules. So 20 rules in total they need to learn. That takes time. As coaches we see the little steps.

* Easiest rule to learn is competitiveness. Competitive focussed over the last month. Specific gameplan rules the hardest. Performing under the pressure, the moment is something that takes time to get use to.

I think we will find that most clubs have the same amount of rules etc... I am not sure this comment was on show last night though.

"3aw saw us doing some rugby tackling drills. Leppitsch said we've been doing that over the past month. Leppitsch also said we've been doing technique work with our tackling."

I definitely think our tackling has improved out of sight this year but I don't believe it was on show last night, I think our tackling was on Holiday with that tart forward pressure.

I wouldn't think it is about the number of rules in place. I would even suggest that some of the "team rules" in place would automatically create the next rule

The key I would think is making sure we don't change them every 10 minutes.

I think previously they changed the rules (read gameplan) every bloody season and it didn't work

20 rules for footy isn't that many at all. Sheesh they shouldn't be driving a car if a player can't remember just 20 rules.

5 offensive rules:
* Create space
* protect and support the ballcarrier - block and shepherd
* If not involved in stoppage spread from it to offer options.
* Play the corridor
* Go long to the hot spot if no free leading options with smalls front and square.

5 defensive rules
* Close down opposition's space.
* Man-on-man at stoppages
* Zone on their kick-in or whatever the tactical structure is.
* Apply pressure inside forward 50 to keep the ball in there.
* Be accountable to your man

10 team rules
* Team comes first. Everything you do must be to better the team's chances of scoring, defending and winning.
* Always talk to each other - "clear", "hot", "pick up so-and-so", etc
* Play in front
* Spoil and don't go for the mark from behind
* tackle don't bump.
* Pin both arms in tackle if outnumbered to cause a 50/50 stoppage; Pin one arm without the footy in tackle if we have the numbers to force a spill or a free kick to us
* No short kicks to a contest
* Kick in preference to handball
* Kick to advantage of your teammate
* Play on as much as possible to move the ball quickly. Play with intensity.

Are they your 20 rules or the clubs MT?

Mine as an example that 20 isn't that many and most are probably stuff we all learnt as kids growing up playing footy.

I think I'd get into trouble if I was told the actual 20 rules and posted them  :shh

Well if it isn't too many, why do are players have such a hard time following most of them?

This must be coming from someone who has never played football at any level?

It takes a great deal of composure and team first attitude to follow team rules, something that being under constant attack in a competitive environment such as the AFL where players are rushed and thus can make the wrong decision and these players being the best players on their junior teams still thinking they have to do it all themselves to win have to adjust to and change their mentality and make consistently good decisions at the AFL level.

Probably because either the concept of team rules, or the implementation of some of the rules, is just so foreign to some of the players. As much as indictment on previous coaching regimes as the players themselves.

Old habits die hard and for some it will take a while to adjust, particularly when under pressure. Some may never adjust - don't slam the door behind you fellas.

I don't think it is simply just about following them it also about learning them

You have to remember for those who been around for a few years that everything they have done for the last 5 odd yerars has been thrown out the door and they are starting from scratch and they are learning things that are completely different. this is going to take time

As for the new kids coming in - they are learning about all facets of AFL from scratch as well, with AFL being very different from TAC Cup & other 2nd tier comps
