-------------------------------------------------

IT TOOK 10 rounds but Richmond has registered its first win for the season, downing a disappointing Port Adelaide by 47 points in horrendous conditions at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In holding the Power and their depleted forward line to the lowest score in the club's history, the Tigers built a 29-point lead by the main break and kicked four goals to one in the second half to win 10.17 (77) to 3.12 (30).

Tough onballer Shane Tuck revelled in the heavy conditions, finishing with 31 disposals (18 contested), nine clearances and 14 tackles.

Captain Chris Newman (23 possessions and six tackles), Trent Cotchin (25 disposals and six clearances) and first-year midfielder Dustin Martin (21 possessions and 11 clearances) dominated around the stoppages.

Port lost Dean Brogan to back spasms before the first bounce and Angus Graham took full advantage to finish with 34 hit-outs and 14 tackles.

In-form forward Jack Riewoldt kicked four goals - including a second-term effort sure to feature in many highlight reels - and Ben Nason had three.

The Power, missing regular forwards Robbie Gray, Warren Tredrea, Daniel Motlop (club suspension) and Jason Davenport (AFL suspension), managed just three goals through Brett Ebert, Daniel Stewart and Cameron Hitchcock.

Parts of AAMI Stadium were under water in the first quarter, but the torrential rain and gale force winds didn't seem to affect the competitive Tigers.

Riewoldt and Robin Nahas gave the visitors a dream start, kicking the opening two goals of the game.

Ebert and Hitchcock responded for Port, but any impetus was stalled when Ebert (concussion) was taken from the ground on a stretcher and Hitchcock injured his shoulder.

Midfielder Steven Salopek added to the Power's woes, injuring his shoulder in an innocuous collision, though he and Ebert would later return.

Riewoldt kicked the opening two goals of the second term to increase the margin to 17 points and another goal to Nason gave the visitors an unassailable lead.

Richmond post first season win over Port
STEVE LARKIN
May 29, 2010 - 7:54PM

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has never doubted he's on the right track, but only now can he show his players light at the end of the tunnel.

Hardwick's Tigers broke through for their first win of the AFL season on Saturday, restricting Port Adelaide to their lowest ever score in the process.

Richmond's slogging 10.17 (77) to 3.12 (30) victory in appalling conditions at AAMI Stadium was their first triumph since round 18 last year.

Driven by ferocious onballers Shane Tuck, Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin, the Tigers pulverised Port in a match played in harsh rain and wind.

Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams apologised for his side's display - their paltry return less than their previous lowest score of 4.8 (32), also against the Tigers, in 1999.

But Hardwick, who played under Williams in Port's 2004 premiership, was well satisfied with his first win as Richmond coach.

"We are actually on the right track - we still have a hell of a long way to go, but they can see some light at the end of the tunnel," Hardwick said.

"I know they have probably heard that before but I think the playing group have started to steady themselves, got that steely resolve amongst themselves."

Richmond recorded an astonishing 140 tackles to smother Port in conditions which reduced much of the game to a rolling slide.

That intensity was best exemplified by Tuck, who was tireless in gathering 31 disposals and 13 tackles.

Tuck's emerging midfield colleagues of Cotchin (25 touches) and Martin (21 possessions) provided grunt which even impressed their coach: a noted former hardman.

"Those types of players are strong bodied players so I thought it was a real advantage for us, the amount of rain that came down early," Hardwick said.

"Dustin Martin could have quite easily been guilty of assault a couple of times, he was that hard at the contest."

The trio helped overpowered Port at the clearances, while Ben Cousins' collected 20 influential disposals and, as Hardwick said, "looked a class above" the rest.

The midfield dominance was capped by a dangerous forward line led by Jack Riewoldt which defied the terrible weather.

Riewoldt kicked four goals while pint-sized goalsneaks Ben Nason (three goals) and Robin Nahas (two goals) made telling contributions.

"We have improved probably every week in some facet of the game," Hardwick said.

"Over the last four or five weeks we have started to see some real change in our behaviours and the way we are playing.

"Our commitment to the tackle, our commitment to the contest was very very good."

Port's bleak day squared their win-loss record at five all, and was further darkened by dislocated shoulders to Steven Salopek and Cameron Hitchcock.

Salopek returned in a courageous act acknowledged by his coach, and Power forward Brett Ebert also returned to the fray after being stretchered from the ground with concussion in the first quarter.

The Tigers host St Kilda on Friday night while Port try to end their three game losing streak against Hawthorn at the MCG next Sunday.

Richmond beat Port Adelaide by 47 points
Herald-Sun
May 30, 2010

RICHMOND has broken through for its first victory of the AFL season, slogging to a 47-point win over Port Adelaide at a sodden AAMI Stadium.

The unfancied Tigers kept the Power to its lowest score in winning 10.17 (77) to 3.12 (30) in abysmal conditions.

Port's paltry return fell short of its previous lowest total of 4.8 (32), also against the Tigers, in 1999.

Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt kicked four goals and Ben Nason three in telling contributions as Richmond posted its first win since Round 18 last year.

The Power lost goalsneak Cameron Hitchcock to what appeared a serious shoulder injury in a match ruined as a spectacle by driving rain, yet no doubt beautiful for long-suffering Tiger fans.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick was delighted with his first win as senior coach, but not surprised.

"We have improved probably every week in some facet of the game," Hardwick said.

"Over the last four or five weeks we have started to see some real change in our behaviours and the way we are playing.

"Our commitment to the tackle, our commitment to the contest, was very, very good."

Ben Cousins, defender Brett Deledio, emerging midfielder Trent Cotchin and prolific possession-winner Shane Tuck revelled in the conditions as the Tigers stunned Port and the hardy home crowd of 16,694.

Riewoldt defied the weather with three first-half goals as Richmond set up a commanding 29-point lead at half-time.

The visitors held their hosts to a meagre 2.4 at the long break, including a sole point in the second quarter.

Their defensive suffocation of the Power continued in the second half as the hosts returned a meagre 1.8.

The likes of Tuck (31 disposals) and Cotchin (25 possessions) provided substantial midfield grunt, with Cousins's polished 20 touches helping overpower Port, who slip to a 5-5 record.

Richmond's tone was set in the first quarter, when it posted 3.4 to Port's 2.3 despite kicking into a fierce wind.

Riewoldt then kicked two of his three goals in a second term marred by Hitchcock's injury as the Tigers laid the foundation of their victory.

Hitchcock's forward line teammate Brett Ebert was stretchered off after a crunching first-quarter marking contest, but returned to action some 20 minutes later.

His recovery was mirrored by Port's Steven Salopek, who was thought to have dislocated a shoulder in the second quarter but also returned.

After the game, Port coach Mark Williams issued a public apology to the small crowd that braved one of Adelaide's wettest and coldest days of the year only to be treated to the upset loss.

Williams, who highlighted the clearance work as the glaring difference between the two sides, also said the Power's depth was being tested because of injuries and unavailability of players as Port Adelaide was upstaged on the same day the club was celebrating 140 years of football.

"I want to apologise to all the people who came today, expecting a better effort than that," Williams said.

"We didn't start very well today (but) all credit to Richmond.

"They beat us at wet weather football without any doubt at all.

"The clearance work was the obvious difference in the stats, if you want to look at them.

"(Shane) Tuck and (Dustin) Martin had 20 clearances between them and they backed it up with some hard ball gets and tackles as well.

"Our boys really got beaten inside. Every time they got a hold of the ball they got tackled and the ball fumbled out.

"It was really disappointing for us, especially on such a significant day for our club."

Williams put as much of it down to the Power's mental approach as its physical output, but declined to use the testing trip to Darwin the previous week as a get-out card.

"There's no doubt that they've got some pretty strong, big bodies," Williams said.

"Tuck and Martin are big guys. But they got in there in front of us and before us.

"But there are no excuses in regards to that. We had a pretty light week on the track and we should have played better than we did.

"If it was a dry day and we got run over in the last quarter we might be able to grab that as some sort of an excuse but we won't be doing that."

The Power was hit by a late withdrawal from ruckman Dean Brogan.

Young Tigers bury Power in the mud
ASHLEY PORTER, ADELAIDE
May 30, 2010

RICHMOND 3.4 6.9 7.11 10.17 (77)
PORT ADELAIDE 2.3 2.4 3.10 3.12 (30)

GOALS
Richmond: Riewoldt 4, Nason 3, Nahas 2, Tambling.
Port Adelaide: Ebert, Hitchcock, D Stewart.

BEST
Richmond: Newman, Deledio, Tuck, Cotchin, Riewoldt, Nason.
Port Adelaide: Carr, Thomas, Boak, Chaplin, K Cornes.

INJURIES
Richmond: Griffiths (corked thigh).
Port Adelaide: Brogan (back) replaced in selected side by Salter, Hitchcock (part-dislocation left shoulder), Salopek (part-dislocation right shoulder).

UMPIRES Kennedy, Wenn, H Ryan.
Crowd: 16,694 at AAMI Stadium.

------------------------------------------

PORT Adelaide went from the hottest night this season in Darwin to the most miserable and wettest afternoon at AAMI Stadium.

And, when struck by cruel injuries, was forced to trudge through the mud a loser to Richmond.

It was Port's lowest-ever score in the AFL, surpassing its 4.8 (32), also against Richmond, in 1999.

But hell, there were no tears in Tigerland as the heartened faithful celebrated Richmond's first win since round 18 last year.

And of course, the first win as an AFL coach for Damien Hardwick.

Played in atrocious conditions, and before the smallest-ever hone-and-away crowd at AAMI Stadium - 16,694 - this contest was always going to be about who would go in hardest for the ball.

Obviously Richmond stood up to the challenge better. Port had 116 tackles, which is normally a fair effort. Richmond had 140, which is exceptional.

This win showed there remains a lot of character underneath the Tiger guernsey.

There has been hint of a breakthrough win, and given Port's injury woes, including the pre-match withdrawal of Dean Brogan (back), even an expectation on Richmond.

Call it fear of failure, if you wish, but Richmond showed from the opening minutes that it was tired of being a loser.

You have to feel for Port given the odds against it, but there have been times when Richmond would not have been capable of winning.

This win was an indication that, during Richmond's horror run, it has actually improved and when it sensed victory, the passion in its performance was obvious.

For the most part, the players slid in the slosh and dropped easy marks. The most inglorious play of the day was late in the first quarter when Richmond's Luke McGuane slid into the southern right goalpost on his back with his legs apart.

Among the many things to like about this Richmond effort was the performance of exciting forward Dustin Martin, playing just his ninth game, while other youngsters, especially Ben Nason (three goals), showed encouraging signs.

Mitch Farmer was also very good against the club that dumped him.

However, experience was the vital element in these conditions, and Chris Newman, Shane Tuck, Brett Deledio, Ben Cousins and Jack Riewoldt (four goals) led the way, ahead of the developing Trent Cotchin.

Port had many key players lost in the mud, but among the brave efforts were Brett Ebert, who was carried off seemingly heavily concussed from a heavy knock, and Steven Salopek, who returned from a right shoulder injury.

Josh Carr excelled in the conditions, and the improving Matt Thomas worked hard too.

But it was a dirty day in more ways than one for Port, which has now lost its past three games - to Carlton (26 points at home), Melbourne (one) and now Richmond - and has been dumped from the eight.

It is hardly form worthy of a finalist and next Sunday its opponent is Hawthorn at the MCG.

For Richmond, the challenge is St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

PLAYER WATCH
Josh Carr (Port Adelaide):
Many were surprised Port retained Carr on its list this season, given the fact he's 30 and slower than before, but he once again demonstrated his great character by battling against the odds in conditions that suit his gritty, never-say-die style. He has 23 disposals - 14 of them contested.

Ben Cousins (Richmond): Cousins, 32 on June 30, may not be as quick as he was, but he was fast enough to run past a Port player and save a goal yesterday. Perhaps a small moment in a game, but it depicted his endeavour and he backed it up with some hard-earned possessions and clever disposals in difficult circumstances. Pre-game, it was suggested on radio he should retire, but his value to Richmond, and especially how he encourages and lifts his young teammates, still makes him a valuable asset.

WHERE THE GAME WAS WON
In atrocious conditions, the game was about playing tough football. Richmond clearly won the game through its superiority in clearances - 53-36. There were times when Port looked threatening and key Richmond players including Brett Deledio, Ben Cousins and Trent Cotchin won the hard ball and led the Tigers out of trouble.

WHERE THE GAME WAS LOST
Port was hit hard by injuries to Salopek, Hitchcock and Ebert, but while they disrupted Port's bench plans, the real key was the number of tackles. Port amassed 116, which is often a reasonable tally, but Richmond had an amazing 140. This was a reflection of the fact Richmond worked hardly and was far more focused. Port was caught out far too often and turned the ball over too many times.

Sweet relief for Hardwick's men

NEARLY half the Richmond side barely knew the words to the club song last night, but it didn't stop them and club supporters from celebrating their first win for the season.

It was Damien Hardwick's first victory as an AFL coach, but he seemed not entirely surprised at the 47-point win over Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium, claiming his young team had been making big progress in recent weeks.

The result was a crushing blow for Port, which last night celebrated its 140th anniversary as a SANFL club by being dumped from the AFL top eight and notching its lowest score ever - 3.12 (30), surpassing the 4.8 (32) it also kicked against Richmond in 1999.

Port was also stung by part-dislocation shoulder injuries to Steven Salopek and Cameron Hitchcock. With the club losing Daniel Motlop for this game through a club suspension, there were unconfirmed reports yesterday that Motlop had not attended the match. Port coach Mark Williams refused to comment on Motlop's whereabouts.

But amid praise for the young Tigers, Hardwick offered a reality check by reminding everyone Richmond was still 1-9 and had a long way to go to be consistently competitive.

''We had five first-year players in the side today and a number of guys who haven't sung the song,'' Hardwick said. ''Look, this will galvanise the group, but understand we are still one and nine, so we have still a hell of a long way to go; we have St Kilda in six days' time. We are happy with the win, but we set winning behaviours, enjoy it for 10 minutes and then move on to the Saints.

''For the new and young players it means to them, heck, we're actually on the right track, but we've still got a hell of a long way to go. They can see some light at the end of the tunnel. I know they have probably heard that before, but I think the playing group has started to steady themselves, got that steely resolve, and hopefully they take the club forward.''

Hardwick praised his players' endeavour, which had developed over the past month.

''It's just fantastic they've finally got some reward for their effort,'' he said. ''I think we have improved probably every week in some facet of the game. We have learnt something and taken it on board.''

Edwards is checking his prostate.
On a serious note, I was watching that footy show on channel seven earlier this morning and they had that fat bald prick Robbo on.  They were talking about Richmond and the commentator was gushing bout how we have been improving and how we should win some more, Richo played it down and said we still had a way to go but that we were on the right track, The captain of Geelong was on and said he we were going in the right direction and would definately win more games, he was actually pretty positive, then Robbo  slagged us off and said we wouldn't win another game all year LOL prick.  As they were cutting to an add Richo turns to Robbo and said something like "you can't help having a go at Richmond can you" or something like that lol.
Lots of people name their swords......
