Tigers in cash hunt
July 5, 2010

RICHMOND chief executive Brendon Gale has not ruled seeking special help from the AFL next year to help the club service its $4 million debt.

Melbourne, the Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne are all expected to receive added funding from the AFL - and the Tigers could be next.

''I wouldn't rule anything out,'' Gale said yesterday.''The debt is a debt we manage. It doesn't prejudice our ability to go forward or operate. But it certainly limits our ability to invest in a few different areas and take some risks.''

Gale said the Tigers were continuing to investigate the feasibility of hosting matches in Hobart. He met Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett last week.

''As a Tasmanian, I think it will be great to have more football games in Tassie,'' Gale said on 3AW. ''At the moment it's confined to Launceston.''

The Tigers will next year stage the first of two ''home'' games in Darwin.

RICHMOND should not BEG, we should not ask for MONEY from the AFL under this program. If Gale wants a debt reduction then he should ask the supporters and members to pay for it, why should we be held hostage after?

The club should open a seperate bank account, Richmond supporters should be told what it is, and anyone who wants to go donate money at the bank can do so! It can happen and at least we know we have members who care, we have 42,000 members, if 20,000 members donate say $50 each then thats a  million bucks right there, now is the time for the club to ask the members, the members are happy with the club and Hardwick, we will all donate! Over 4 or 5 years we will raise the money and pay out the debt.

I'd rather we just had a fundraising night to eliminate our debt like Hawthorn & Melbourne have done. At least that way the supporters get something back for their donations.

They should take advantage from the AFL just like the other clubs have before them. AFL is making millions off the clubs

Sensationalistic press Ramps, just another article attempting to deflate and worry the tiger supporters, after all there has been far to much positiveness about the playing group over the last few weeks and certain sections of the press just can't have that, oh no that just wouldn't be right would it Commetti you stuffing parasite idiot.

Think Gale has played it well again.

Just a gentle reminder to AFL and Tasmania that we are not out of the woods because we have 42,000 members and a few wins.
Six weeks ago we were a basket case in the style of Fitzroy.
With the talk about Tassie and how it should be gifted to those poor clubs like North and the Demons, Benny is reminding the AFL of our still desparate financial position, while on the other news story he is emphasising our ties to Tassie.

Very clever operator, our Benny.

this.

Add a fundraiser next year too, reckon we could smash most of it in one fell swoop if we go on to have a good year next year

we're not begging ffs and if you don't ask you don't get.
Alternatively we could sit around saying nothing in the hope the afl would just say,"hey, you know what, richmond needs money so lets give it to them.

I favor the more productive approach personally

Wonder if the combination of the debt and the wave of success we are currently riding has anything to do with the phone call I got from the club today selling me a $200 raffle ticket?  Good timing?

Something like Melbourne's debt demoliton website....

http://www.debtdemolition.com.au/

Reducing our debt reduces money "wasted" on interest repayments which could be going to facilities, equipment, etc that will make us a strong side.

The Dees have only $612k remaining of their original $5m debt to pay off. That's an impressive effort and the RFC should consider something similar with our larger supporter base.

Yeah but how long before they are in debt again

They need to make profits consistently (with or without AFL handouts). Haven't seen them do that yet

Western Bulldogs to maul $5m debt (Herald-Sun)
« Reply #14 on: October 08, 2010, 01:14:36 AM »
The Bulldogs are copying Melbourne's idea with their own "Bulldoze the Debt" appeal to wipe out their own $5 million debt.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/western-bulldogs-to-maul-debt/story-e6frf9jf-1225935687691

THE Western Bulldogs are set to launch an aggressive bid to wipe off their $5 million debt.

Supporters will soon be asked to contribute to a "Bulldoze the debt" appeal, with the club hopeful of clearing its books within three years.

Bulldogs chief executive Campbell Rose yesterday described the task as a "mountain of gigantic proportions", but is confident it is achievable.

Servicing the $5 million debt costs the Dogs about $480,000 a year in interest, hampering the clubs' ability to keep up with others clubs' football budgets.

The "Bulldoze the debt" concept will include a major invitation-only function on the Whitten Oval turf next year. It closely mirror's Melbourne's Jim Stynes-inspired "Debt Demolition" appeal, which has raised $5.1 million so far.

"I think Melbourne set the benchmark and I think we should be trying to replicate that." Although Demons' supporters are generally more affluent than Dogs' fans, Rose is confident the club can win enough support from its rank-and-file.
