Tigers look to rattle Blues' finals run

THE CHANCE to make mischief with Carlton's finals aspirations will be just one of the subtexts bubbling beneath the surface when Richmond clashes with the Blues at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

Carlton is in sixth place on the AFL ladder and have a better percentage than the sides below them.

However, with Melbourne and North Melbourne hovering just outside the eight, the Blues are by no means assured of September action.

They face a tough road home, with Richmond, Geelong and Fremantle - at Subiaco - to come, so this week is a vital game.

Round one 2008 was the last time the Tigers beat their bitter rival and the Blues will take heart from the recent record between the sides.

Richmond captain Chris Newman said the side had not forgotten those performances.

"They've put out some really good performances the last couple of times, and we've been really disappointing," he said at St Kilda beach on Tuesday morning.

"It's another opportunity to get one back on them, and show them how far we've come from the start of the season.

"It's a nice opportunity to play a rival team that draws a really big crowd and a big stage, so I think it’s an exciting time."

While the second game of each of those seasons has been far closer, Newman was quick to point out the differences from a week ago, when Carlton surged home over the Bombers like a tidal wave, kicking 10 goals to one, while the Tigers were outscored six goals to two when the match was on the line.

“I think it’s going to be a huge challenge for the group - last week Carlton absolutely annihilated Essendon late in the game, and we fell away, so it’s obviously a huge area of improvement that we’ve got to show this week.”

Newman also said that there was plenty more to be gained before the season ended, underlining Richmond's aim of winning its remaining matches.

“There’s still a huge amount of respect and belief to be got out of the last three weeks - there’s obviously still 12 points to be had, too,” he said.

“We’ve got a hell of a lot of work to do with a whole range of areas, so for the supporters’ sake, to be going out there and giving ourselves every possible chance to win the game, I think it’s really important.

“I think putting four quarters together throughout the year has been a bit of a challenge for a young group, but I think that we’re making steady progress.”

QUESTION MARKS
Can Richmond find some support for Jack Riewoldt in the forward line?
Last weekend against Melbourne, the Tigers had 11 more inside-50s yet lost by five goals. Damien Hardwick tried Luke McGuane, Will Thursfield and Shane Tuck next to Riewoldt in attack, but they had little impact on the contest. This week he’ll need to find a plan D.

WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
While there isn’t a whole lot more talent in the Carlton team when compared to the emerging Tigers, the simple fact is that the Blues have more to play for. The prospect of sewing up their place in the finals should be enough to inspire a winning performance.

PREDICTION
Carlton by 33 points

The Blues small forwards - Betts and Gartlett - are the main concern. They had a day out against us in round 1 IIRC when everyone was wondering where the Blues would get their goals without Fev. It's been a weakness of ours for a long time trying to quell the opposition's quick goal-smart small forwards. See Milne and the other week with Leon Davis.

Scoreboard pressure is the other issue. We can't find ourselves down by 5 goals at quarter time as we've done the past 3 times we've played them. The Blues are very good frontrunners and a confidence side once they have a decent lead.

Hardwick said there no place in the modern game for forwards of the ilk of Morton, thus the move up the ground.

I think he is looking for the taller type of forward to work in tandem with Jack rather than midsized.

Griffiths was a huge loss and very important to our structures and the team going forward. It is no coincidence that we won every game he played and Jack kicked an absolute poo-load with him around. He didn't kick a bag of goals but there is no doubt he knows how to play in the forward line. A very clever player. Positions himself well and will draw players away from the contest. You rarely saw both Jack and Griff going for the same mark or getting in each others way. Jack would have loved having him there. Hopefully his shoulders will be OK because he is going to be a ripper. I'm really excited about this kid.

We really need another KPF as a back up to both Griff and Jack.

I realise this maybe right out of left field but why couldnt we experiment with Gourdis in the forward line as a foil for Jack? At least it gets him in the team and he is athletic enough at ground level to apply forward pressure.

Over here in Perth we do not get the Richmond/Carlton game live.....infact the earliest I can watch it is MIDNIGHT :banghead :banghead

I would normally get on the 3aw website and listen to the game  however I believe we might now live in an age where you can watch the game live on the net. :pray

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There are a couple of sites about that people stream sports on. justin dot tv used to have AFL games , not sure if they still do as the AFL were trying to prevent it from happening.

Someone posted another site on here a while back that also has people stream AFL games but i cant remember what it was, sorry.

Why don't we try and utilise the resting ruckman for this. I think both Gus and Browne are capable of marking and kicking goals or even Vickery as a permanent forward.

It's not just a case of being tall and standing in the forward line. You need to understand how to play the position. When to stay down and block. How to block without giving a free away. When to lead and where to lead, hopefully dragging a few defenders with you.

Jacks being double, triple, quadruple teamed at the moment. If a player can lead away from Jack and take a defender or 2 with him, or if the defenders stay with Jack then that should leave the player reasonably open. Then it's a matter of the rest of the team being smart enough to look ahead and spot the unmarked man in the open. A couple of times being caught out and the opposition is going to take a bit more notice of you leaving Jack potentially 1 on 1 and we know he's a good contested mark.

It worries me when I see Jack taking a contested mark and the player most likely to spoil him is his own team-mate. I've seen this a couple of times recently.
