Small Forwards
« on: August 19, 2010, 09:44:24 PM »
I am not up with the young talent in this years draft. So i have a few questions....

Who in the draft that is avalaible is the best small forward? ie Betts/Garlett types

And how much importances do you place on them in footy these days?

And should we maybe place more importance on one in this years draft instead of trying to fluke one late in the draft or off a rookie list. ie Nahas/Hicks/Gilligan/Nason

I personally do, we have lacked one for a long time and now with Big Jack up forward going well, we need a star at his feet to crumb anything he drops and tackle everything in sight.
Maybe not pick 6 but maybe with our next pick???

we have more important holes to fill in our list first imo.
Holes like
Midfield depth,
finding long term viable options as Key Fwds and Key Backs, atm only Jack is certain long termer. We dont know yet with Griffiths, Post, Astbury Rance, Grimes.
Better skilled outside runners,
ruck.
Like Hawthorn, fwd pocket specialist with an early draft pick is down the list of importance for mine

How many goals has he kicked Popelord?
I love Kingy but we need a little fella that can pop up and kick 5 or more in a game. Not in a season.
Pressure is one thing but putting goals on the board is another....

FWIW There is an article from Sheehan about the small forwards going to the Draft Camp Combine on the AFL site.

Agree a small forward is badly needed at the club.

BT we have enough Turtle from fantasy island lookalikes in our team we dont need anymore.

absolutely we have more pressing issues that another skinny midget to be added to our team

I totally agree we have far to many midgets Daneil BUT a really good one would be nice. And they all don't need to be skinny. Eg Burns, Varco from Geelong, Schnieder, Milne from St. Kilda, Davis and Didak from Collingwood.
Notice something in common with the sides i mentioned???
Really important position in todays footy and some teams even have 2 or even 3 in the same side.
We need more goal kicking power at our club and unlike the old days, not just the big guys kick goals.
Our game has changed but i don't think we have changed our thinking....

the thing is BT all those clubs you mentioned have more than 1 big forward to feed to the little boys.
Brown, Cloke, Anthony, Jolly, Dawes
Mooney, Pods, Hawkins, Ottens
Nick R, Kosi
Buddy, Roughy

no point having smalls when all you have is back Jack up forward and if he doesnt mark it then the opposition defenders do.

If we can mould another big forward then we can focus on the small ones.

Our biggest problem at the moment is whats been our problem for the last 20 years. We need to find multiple forwards up forward and i believe one of Post, Astbury will come good. Griffiths is an unknown due to injury but has shown some good things.

I will lose my poo if we pick up a small in this draft, must be a midfielder. I am sick to death of oppostion players pushing our skinny little players to the side as they brush past them. Its getting rediculous now to be honest.

Havn't we been pretty competitive in terms of contested possession and clearances most of the year, even when we were losing early on?
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

Just looking on YouTube at some kids in the up coming draft and can anyone tell me some names of some genuine small forward types worth looking at?
