As Florida officials worried about public safety surrounding a small church's plan to burn the Koran, US President Barack Obama added his voice to the chorus of opposition to the church's intention to burn copies of Islam's holiest book.

Obama urged the Reverend Terry Jones to call off his plan to engage in a Koran-burning protest this weekend.

In an interview with the US network ABC's 'Good Morning America' broadcast on Thursday, Obama said what Jones proposes "is completely contrary to our values as Americans. This country has been built on the notion of freedom and religious tolerance."

The US President said Jones' action would be a "recruitment bonanza for Al-Qaeda."

"We're already seeing protests against Americans just by the mere threat," he said.
At a news conference on Wednesday, Jones, who was flanked by an armed escort said he had received more than 100 death threats since announcing in July that he would stage "International Burn-a-Koran Day," on the anniversary of the 2001 September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

The book, according to Jones, is evil because it espouses something other than biblical truth and, in his understanding, incites radical, violent behaviour among Muslims.

Muslims consider the Koran the word of God and insist it be treated with the utmost respect.
Jones' Dove Outreach Centre is independent of any denomination and follows the Pentecostal tradition, which teaches that the Holy Spirit can manifest itself in the modern day.

Pentecostals often view themselves as engaged in spiritual warfare against satanic forces.

Reminds me of that small town in Texas which just before entering the town has a sign which reads"the Devil is not welcome here"
As much as I admire many aspects of the USA,boy they sure do have some fruitcakes there and in positions of power and influence too.
