Justin Sherman latest to flee Brisbane Lions den

    * Greg Denham
    * From: The Australian
    * September 17, 2010

SPEEDY midfielder/forward Justin Sherman yesterday confirmed he was the Brisbane Lions' next salary-cap relief casualty.

Richmond heads a list of clubs keen on gaining the contracted player's services, with Sydney also holding red-hot interest.

Sherman could be the third high-profile player to exit the Lions following Michael Rischitelli, who has joined the Gold Coast, and Jared Brennan, who informed Brisbane this week his future will be elsewhere.

Rischitelli and Brennan, who is leaning to the Suns and Carlton as his two main playing options beyond this year, were on lucrative deals and coming out of contract, whereas Sherman has two years to run on a heavily back-ended contract worth about $800,000 for 2011 and 2012 combined.

The departures of Rischitelli, Brennan and Sherman should be enough to ensure the Lions are under next year's cap, and will enable them to keep highly valued defender Josh Drummond.

Sherman's management has had discussions with Richmond, which is believed to have offered him the security of a three-year deal. A potential contract offer from the Tigers may not necessarily be reliant on Brisbane subsidising any future remuneration, which is common practice when players on lucrative deals swap clubs. The Lions are understood to be agreeable to accepting a second-round national draft selection in return for Sherman.

Sherman, 23, who was recruited from Tasmania with a third-round selection in the 2004 national draft, has played 114 games for the Lions, including 17 this year. He was runner-up to Simon Black in the Lions' best-and-fairest award in 2006, but, like Brennan, did not figure in the top 10 in this season's count, behind Rischitelli.

Richmond, in the absence of Ben Cousins, is hoping to bolster its midfield with several experienced additions by trading in Sherman and out-of-contract Bomber Bachar Houli.

Hardly makes you feel excited :-\

Anyway this would mean we give up pick 29 for Sherman leaving us with just one pick inside the top 45 of the draft. An extra (priority) pick would've come in handy wouldn't it :whistle.

You'd better hope by the time trade week comes along we are also trading players away to gain decent picks or serious questions will need to be asked of those in charge of our list management and total recruiting strategy.

I'm just wondering if this is an application of "The no short cuts policy" certainly doesn't look or sound like it to me.

We want to "be getting picks in the first or second rounds" not be giving them away.

Spot on RR.

As I said you'd hope expendable players will be going out the other way to gain us some decent draft picks as well otherwise it'll be groundhog day.

Sherman for a 2nd rounder is a bad deal again IMHO. Complete waste of a good pick.

ooh please surely this is April Fools again is it?

"Sherman has two years to run on a heavily back-ended contract worth about $800,000 for 2011 and 2012 combined"
so does that mean we would have to foot the bill for that as well as giving the Lions draft picks.

Dimma will be judged purely on decisions like this i hope this aint true because Sherman has never been able to string descent consecutive seasons together.

Craig Cameron trying to justify his position by be seen to be doing something. Just leave it fool and draft kids

is he highly related or highly rated lol

he would be a good pick up, he has pace and can kick goals

we need fast skillfull outside players , dont know why ppl get all upset

sydney want him that means he is valuable, sydney dont just choose losers

he will be a good pick up esp if he comes cheap. as i said he is still young, and is much better than any kid we will pick up in the draft

this myth that u have to rebuild solely from the draft is ridiculous

I have faith in what ever the club decides. Yes we have made HUGE trade errors in the past BUT a hell of a lot has changed at punt road in the last couple of years we now have a "full time" recruiting department who did bloody well with there job last season and I am sure they will do the same again this year.
Our list still need a hell of allot of tweaking! outside of Lid's Cotch Dusty and Jack there aint that much more to be excited about. Shermin and Houli fit our needs and I would rather have there names on our list than a few others ATM.

I HIGHLY doubt that we'd be giving up a 2nd rounder for him, ESPECIALLY since we'd probably be paying out at least half of his contract to help out Brisbane with their salary cap problems.  Would be very annoyed if it was more than a 3rd rounder that we gave them.

Id say there's a pretty good chance we would get a 2nd round pick in exchange for one of rance, thursty, mcguane or moore so it may not be so bad.

Have to agree with X about drafting kids not being the only way to build a list.
In the past we have made some shocking decisions in terms of picking up hacks and giving away picks, but considering how poorly we have drafted in the past we probably didnt loose  much at the end of the day.

Saying we must only draft kids because of this history is throwing the baby out with the bath water. It doesnt matter how the player comes to the club, what is important is that it's the right player for the right price
