Mark Thompson quits Geelong to join Essendon
« on: September 28, 2010, 02:17:16 AM »
ESSENDON appears poised to leave Geelong in turmoil, after pulling off a massive coup by poaching dual Cats premiership coach Mark Thompson back to Windy Hill.
Thompson, a past Essendon captain, dual best-and-fairest winner and multiple premiership player, has agreed to work as James Hird's boss in what is an extraordinary boost for the flagging Bombers, which have lost their way since Kevin Sheedy was axed three years ago.

The imminent announcement that Thompson will next year be the Bombers' director of coaching, above senior coach-in-waiting James Hird, is expected to rock the foundations of Skilled Stadium, where Thompson is contracted as the Cats' senior coach for another season.

do we know this is as fact???

If thats true Bomber will look like the biggest fraud ever to be associated with this game.

After all the Ablett copped from him and his body language toward him only to do the same thing is a disgrace really.

A Bomber/Hird partnership is destined for success. We need Hird on his own...lol

UPDATE 3.18pm: GEELONG hopes to have an answer this week from Mark Thompson about whether he will coach the Cats next year.

Thompson told the Cats this morning he was suffering from burnout and wanted some time out after 11 years as senior coach.

The club confirmed in a media conference at 3pm that Thompson had been approached by Essendon, which today announced Hird as coach for the next four years.

"In Mark's own words, he doesn't wish to go there," Geelong chief executive Brian Cook said.

"The issue is not whether he's going to Essendon, the issue is whether he's coaching at all."

Cook said the Cats hoped Thompson would fulfil the final year of his contract but they could not afford to wait long for him to make up his mind.

"While we want to lok after Mark's future, we have to look after future of the club," he said.

"We expect a decision from Mark sooner rather than later."

Thompson has been told to talk to his family and close friends and return with an answer before trade week, which starts next Tuesday.

If Thompson says he wants to coach the club next year the Cats are prepared to give him a break of several months to return refreshed for next season.

"I hope he fulfils his contract because he is a great coach," Cook said.

"The unfortunate reality is that - in our opinion, and we're not medicos - he is suffering some form of burnout after 11 years. He's reassessing his life, he reassesing his future, and we're caught in the middle of that.

"But I hope he coaches us next year. But we want a coach who is fully committed."

Cook said he was surprised when Thompson spoke to him at 11am today to say he needed some time off but he believed the coach had been totally honest.

He said his belief was if Thompson decided not to coach Geelong next year that would be the end of his coaching career, and he would concentrate on his property interests.

Cook said the club expected a decision from star player Gary Ablett by the end of this week. Ablett is being offered a huge contract to join the Gold Coast.

"I think the odds are against it (Ablett staying) because we can't match the offer of the Gold Coast, but we're hoping he stays for other reasons."

Hird, a former premiership teammate of Thompson, was this morning named Essendon coach for the next four years.

Asked about the possibility of working with Thompson, Hird said he had not spoken to his former premiership teammate but he liked the idea of a "senior assistant" to help as he starts his new career.

Yep what a dramatic fall-off in the space of two weeks.

If the Cats are smart they'll cut the older 30 and near-30 year old players now and rebuild while they still have the rest of their early-mid 20 y.o. premiership players still around. Two first round picks for Ablett plus a few clever trades could bring in wave of top kids and see them back challenging in a few years time. However if they keep hold onto the current older crop minus Ablett then they'll eventually fall into a big trough similar to Essendon post-2001 as they premiership player whittle away and no elite kids recruited and developed to replace them.

I'd reckon Thompson knows their great era is over and either he doesn't have the motivation of going through another rebuild which could take years or he doesn't have the heart to cut older champion players who have gone into battle for him and delivered two flags yet age has now caught up with them. Mind you after going on all year about not understanding why Ablett would want to go north for the $$$, leaving now before his contract is up is a slap in the face to the Geelong players.

Caro doesn't seem convinced he's not going to the Dons

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/dons-loom-for-bomber-20100928-15vs9.html

And if that's the case, they must breed a lot of lying dogs down at Bomberland with Hird and now him going deny, deny, deny and then get appointed the next day.
Who was Hird fooling?  He had his team in place only hours after saying he was just a candidate  :wallywink

Hird's not a very good liar is he  :wallywink.

If Thompson does end up at Essendon as well then he must have gone to the Mal Michael school of retirement :whistle.
