Exploiting the Substitution Rule
« on: October 10, 2010, 11:13:02 AM »
Waht is the best way to exploit the new substitution rule?

My suggestion would be to find a tall utility type which, injury occured, could cover any number of positions directly or swap with someone on the field who could then take the place of the injuried player. A player such as Astbury could fit the KPP role but not the midfield role. Tuck perhaps could fill this role also. Vickery is a player that could play at either end as well as ruck but there is one player that I though would be particularly versitile and that is....

Grigg! He has the height and the size to play tall and small at either end if needed and is a genuine midfielder also. Perhaps this versitility and his size is another major reason we swapped him for Collins.

Many experts are saying a second ruckman will fill this position but others are saying it will be a midfielder type.

What's your opinion?

The names that popped into my head were Vickery, Post, Astbury and Grigg

I think we need to use it for fresh legs in the midfield
Especially early on we need to use it to develop youngsters who aren't fit enough to play out a full game yet

I wonder if this will mean less game time for players such as Vickery or will they rotate him and Gus through the forwardline more? A player such as a Kozi or even Hawkins may become far more valuable to a team under these rules...

A combo of two burst players would be one ploy. Get one to go full bore in the first half + 10 mins of 3rd and then replace with the sub.

It'll kill off sides going with a two genuine ruckman combo. Malthouse had already started ignoring having a 2nd genuine ruckman so he maximised rotations on the 4-interchange bench. It won the Pies the flag. The 3-interchange will make it a necessity to have 3 runners beit small or tall. Vickery and Post will be very important to us as they have the potential to play KP and ruck yet they are mobile. Especially TV once he bulks up and gains the strength to compete in the ruck. Kreuzer types (talls that can run and act as tall mids) will be worth their weight in gold.
