Including Brad Miller as a rookie :-X, we will have just six Tigers older than 24 on our list at the start of next season. I have no idea but if it is but it must be close to one of the youngest lists ever in the AFL.

Gold Coast Suns aside, Richmond will enter the 2011 season with the least experienced playing list seen in the AFL competition since 2000.

Following delistings at the end of the 2010 season, and the completion of the trade period, the Tigers have a combined total of 36 players on their senior and rookie lists,   at an average of just over 41 games per player.

The retirements of Ben Cousins, Troy Simmonds and Graham Polak, along with the trading of Richard Tambling to Adelaide, and Jordan McMahon’s delisting, has ripped more than 830 games experience from the Club’s playing list.

In 2011, Richmond will have just three players with more than 100 games experience running around - captain Chris Newman (175), Shane Tuck (130) and Brett Deledio (128).

Even the Gold Coast Suns will have more players with 100 games-plus experience at their disposal in their inaugural season of AFL football next year - Josh Fraser (200), Gary Ablett (192), Campbell Brown (159), Jared Brennan (119), Nathan Bock (113), and Michael Rischitelli (111).

You have to go all the way back to the Port Adelaide and Fremantle playing lists in the 2000 season, to find less experience than what Richmond will field in 2011.

The Power averaged just 38 games per player in 2000, with only two members of their playing list on the league’s ‘centurion’ list - Gavin Wanganeen (178) and Stephen Paxman (165).  Four years later (2004), Port created history, winning its first AFL premiership.

The Dockers, in 2000, averaged 39 games per player, with five centurions - Adrian Fletcher (190), Dale Kickett (147), Tony Modra (138), Ashley Prescott (111), and Jason Norrish (104).

Richmond also will start the 2011 season with only five players on its senior list aged 25 or more - Newman (28), Tuck (28), Kelvin Moore (26), Jake King (26) and Nathan Foley (25).

I didn't realise Jake King was that old

He must've been pretty mature when we took him

Gee thats a huge shift in the last 2 years just imagane if Kingy and Tuck were gone as well as most thought they would be around round 6. Would think in about 3-4 years that list should be entering its prime. Just shows he young we will be and that we are still a while off. If lids keeps up this durability he will play 350 games :thumbsup :thumbsu

and still the problem remains of not enough quality entering that 23 yr old group. 9 of 14 are ordinary.  personally i reckon 22 plus is the cut of for established bona fides in players take jack away from the 22 yr olds and you have to ask how much quality is there.

Would have to agree claw wouldn't be suprisied if 6 or 7 of those in the oldest age group are gone (through trade or delisting) in the next two years. Thats why i think we are a while off finals football becuase most of our class is still in that youngest age group. Would hope to get a bit out of that 22 year old with maybe 6 playing an important part in our future (Connors, Edwards, Gourdis, Jack, Grigg, Houli if we take him).

Would think that is a bit tough on Jackson would guess the club thinks very highly of him. Also think Post will be given another season to develop meaning if he continues to struggle he will be under the pump in 2012 as the club considers him a late developer. Fairly on the money with the rest i would guess and would add that despite King's great finish to the season think he is still under the pump next season.

i always thought as a general rule 22 thru 27.
and while some may retire at 28 good players still play damn good footy at 28 plus to many cases of this in evidence.lots of things come into the equation to determine which players are past it and who isnt it.i think it fair to say at 28 it is generally percieved its down hill from there but not always so.

Geez that age group 25-28 says how badly we drafted.  4 off the rookie list, 1 recycled (Tuck) and only one (Newman) drafted in the national draft.  I think 2 of those rookies were mature age rookies too (Miller and King).

That's 4 years of failed national drafts!!!

And no players aged above that's at least 2 years more of failed national drafts!

6 years of failed national drafts.
No wonder we are crap.

We're surprisingly good at our rookie drafts though.

I dont know why we have so few 20 and 21 year olds though, both those two years could be failures too, hypothetically we could only have cotchin and astbury or vickery from those two years in 3 years time.  Thats another worry.

Well spotted tidy. That age list clearly shows how (poorly) we recruited annually and how as a club we are still paying for these poor decisions 6-10 years after they were made. It's these earlier drafts of the decade that should now be filling our senior core. The draft system is in theory designed to help struggling clubs but if you get it wrong at the draft table over a few consecutive years you can stuff up a list and the team for the next decade  :P. The lack of 20-21 year olds comes from us only using 3 picks on kids in 2007 (one was Putt who's gone) and 2 picks in 2008. Too have such few picks as club meant to be in full rebuild mode was a disgrace. We can't blame one person either as each was made by a different head of our footy dept (Miller 2007 and Cameron 2008). You would've thought once you sack one you state clearly to the new guy to not repeat the same mistakes as his predecessor  ::). At least 2009 and 2010 we had and have a decent number of picks to draft with.

True some players do retire at 28 (and even younger) but most IMO are still at the peak of their powers. For instance at Freo, Pavlich is still as good as ever as a 28 this year and Sandilands will be 28 next year. Jolly was 28 this year at the Pies. There's uncertainty because you can argue smalls are probably falling away from their best at 28 whereas talls and especially ruckman are still going strong as ever if not better in their late 20s. Drawing the line at 28 seemed to work better than 27 when I put this together. There's no fix rule. I use to have the "prime" age at 22-27 but it seemed to slant the overall lists as older and more experienced than they were.
