Punt Rd victory for Richmond

RICHMOND has kicked a big off-field goal by securing year-round control of its historic Punt Rd Oval training base.

The Tigers have shared the ground with the Richmond Cricket Club for more than a century, causing complications with pre-season campaigns and hard cricket wickets.

But Richmond chiefs will today announce a new home has been found for the cricket club at Mt Waverley, with relocation to take place early in the new year.

It would seem that the moving of cricket could be the "big" announcement

Good news but not great news

Major sponsorship news is what i am after

Have some faith WP. If anyone will get a good sponsorship deal done it's this board. If it takes time then it takes time.

It should be the other way around, Punt Road oval should be the MCG dimensions (if possible) and Craigieburn the Etihad dimensions. We're going to train more at Punt Road and play more games at the MCG.

I'd be worried if it's the board who's looking for our new majors.

That job belongs to Benny Gale and his team. The board just signs off on it

I appreciate what you are saying about taking time but I don't want to face the same scenario as 2008 when it took until Feb to get a new sponsor - that is leaving it too late IMHO; especailly when you consider what other areas are impacted by not having major sponsors (eg merch sales)

Cannot do it wayne. To expand Punt Road to MCG dimensions would require extending out into Brunton avenue or into Yarra Park or loosing some of the buildings ....  ;D

The fact that the club wanted a ground the size of the MCG and the developers at Craigieburn agreed is one of the reasons Craigieburn got built and the RFC got the deal to have it as a 2nd base

Fair call. I was looking for a collective term for all the people involved and picked "board" which is wrong.

True but there's not a lot we can do if it takes until February. If we ended up with a deal similar to the one the scum just signed I wouldn't be complaining too much about a bit of merchandise sales. OK it's unlikely well end up with a deal as good as the scum's at this point in time, but we may end up with a significantly better deal than we had.

This all fits into the long-term plan for our training facilities

Craigieburn - MCG size ground
Punt Rd - Docklands size ground

No way could you fit a MCG size ground at Punt Rd oval unless before the redevelopment we could have moved the historic Jack Dyer Stand and David Mandie pool further outwards plus shifted the entrance and carpark off Punt Rd further north. Punt Rd Oval was never designed for expansion shoved in the corner of Punt Rd and Brunton Ave.

It would seem that the moving of cricket could be the "big" announcement

I agree WP. Not exactly earth-shattering news given we already knew this was going to happen. Still positive news for the Club though.
