Helbig is not skinny. His form warranted games as did McBean (Lonergan, Grigg, Pettard, McGaune, Aaron Edwards). List management has been poor and I fear for the future evolution of the list under Hardwick and co.

Helbig's form warranted games?

When he got his chance he was like a fish out of water and played poorly

Then he got injured (again)

Happy to give him another season but if a good offer comes along that moves us higher in the draft order we have to look at it. If the offer doesn't suit us then sign for another season but that has to be it.

Same goes for most on our list, it's harsh but it is the reality of list management

Our problem for too long is we've held onto some blokes a season or two too long. I know every player is different and their development times vary but at some point you have to say times up and make a call on them.

McBean didn't get an AFL game this because the defensive side of his game wasn't ready for AFL. That's why Edwards A & McGuane were played ahead of him; defensively their inside 50 presuure was far superior as it should be BTW. It wasn't because he wasn't going to kick goals but because defensively as a 1st year player he wasn't ready. (Was told this at a pre-match briefing)

I would think the fact we no longer rush kids in for the sake of it and that they have to earn their spots by ticking ALL boxes is a positive sign for the future. The fact that Arnott had to wait a season and half to play AFL footy and was ready re all facets of the game shows that our development strategdy is working.

And no doubt it will be further enhanced when we have our own VFL side next year where it wont be about results but development and teaching kids to play

Agreed. I think the VFL team will be excellent for the younger players and returning injured stars.

Very keen to go watch some of the games too!

Would sign him up
yep me too.  hes a good  size. he does have good skills good pace knows where to go to get the ball. and hes tough.
could become a decent player. always reluctant to draw a line thru any player who has primarily struggled thru injury.
should be given one more yr but if theres no real improvement after that he would have to go.

other thing is imo we need to build on the number of mids we have not cut into the number. i reckon we were 3 or 4 mids short this yr as it was. tucks retirement only makes it worse.

You're a third rounder.

Ouch

Don't rate these at all?

Matty Arnott, Luke McGuane, Bachar Houli (was a 3rd rounder when picked by Essendon)

A few from other clubs:

Nathan Vardy (Geelong)
Rory Sloane (adel)
Ben Stratton (Hawks)
Sam Reid (Syd)

And what about 4th rounders? Ryan O'Keffe of Sydney an absolute gun player he was a 4th rounder

Plenty of gems out there just have to find them and more importantly be able to develop them

Was expecting this. Some good names can be picked up 3rd round and after but they are more often than not spuds, especially for us.  :lol at putting Vardy in there

would love for us  to get our hands on nathan vardy. the only thing that has held him back is injury. lets see 3rd rounders at geelong.  vardy, christensen, s motlop, j hunt, t hunt, enright,
reckon most sides could name there fair share.  imo 3rd rounders are very valuable id sure as hell rather a pick  around 37 - 54 than after.

geez adam goodes, sam mitchell and dane swan were all  3rd rounders swan might have been 4th even.

So you think you'd be happy swapping Helbig for a 3rd rounder? Some quality can come out of the 3rd round but I'd rather keep a player that's shown a bit than take another punt in the 3rd round

If you were to get GWS's 3rd rounder then you are a pick only a half a dozen or so after our 2nd rounder, would think that would be a pretty decent pick to have

Each to there own :thumbsup
Maybe I should of said I don't rate our picks in the 3rd round (yes it's a bit contradicting when Helbig was there abouts wasn't he? And our most recent ones look good).

Plenty of quality in the 3rd round, 4th round and beyond is more speculative.

Bit early to make a call on him. Alright I'll start throwing some names around and you tell me how quality they are
2004 draft. Judging by this forum Mcguanes a dud, LeCras is good, Travis Cloke was a F/S so ignore that, people seem to think Maric is good (one year wonder so far). So we'll say 2-3? Bats deep doesn't it
3   36   Luke McGuane   Broadbeach Football Club   Richmond
3   37   Mark LeCras   West Perth Football Club   West Coast Eagles
3   38   Damien McCormack   Dandenong Stingrays   Western Bulldogs
3   39 (F/S)   Travis Cloke   Eastern Ranges   Collingwood
3   40   Ivan Maric   Calder Cannons   Adelaide
3   41 (F/S)   Luke Blackwell   Swan Districts Football Club   Carlton
3   42 (F/S)   Jesse W. Smith   Calder Cannons   Kangaroos
3   43   Michael Newton   Murray Bushrangers   Melbourne
3   44 (F/S)   Mitch Morton   Claremont Football Club   West Coast Eagles
3   45   Justin Sherman   Clarence Football Club   Brisbane Lions
3   46   Henry Slattery   West Adelaide Football Club   Essendon
3   47   David Spriggs   Geelong   Sydney Swans
3   48 (F/S)   Nathan Ablett   Modewarre   Geelong

3   50   Jayden Attard   Dandenong Stingrays   Brisbane Lions

2005 draft 1 maybe 2 good players there
3   36   Jake Edwards   Western Jets   Carlton
3   37   Jack Anthony   Northern Knights   Collingwood
3 (F/S)   38   Travis Tuck   Dandenong Stingrays   Hawthorn
3 (F/S)   39   Jay Neagle   Gippsland Power   Essendon
3   40   Travis Casserly   Swan Districts   Richmond
3   41   Rhan Hooper   Mt Gravatt   Brisbane Lions
3   42   Robert Warnock   Sandringham Dragons   Fremantle
3   43   Andrew Swallow   East Fremantle   Kangaroos
3   44   Alipate Carlile   Murray Bushrangers   Port Adelaide
3   45   Kasey Green   West Coast   Kangaroos
3   46   Travis Baird   Brisbane Lions   Western Bulldogs

Not in this year's draft.  Very shallow after 35ish.
