I'd give him another year given his injury history, but tbh, apart from being a good size and hard at it, I don't see much in him.

Can give the ball a decent hoist at goal on both feet. Don't know about his field kicking though

reckon you have to look at each draft differently each yr.  some are full of top end talent and drop away quickly some run deep.
i still think you can pick up good talent anywhere in the draft if you have the right criterias set in place.
2006 id say about half of the 3rd rounders could be described as servicable at worst.
mark austin, alwyn davey, goldstein, nathan krakouer went okay until he lost interest at gc, josh kennedy, tom hawkins, houli, houlihan. garland, reimers, mckay schofield.

2008 shiels, smith, zac clarke, broadbent, steven motlop, mitch robinson, banfield , sloane, stanley, t  hunt, lisle.

of course the backend of the third round is harder the further you go into any draft it is harder.

just my opinion but i reckon theres enough talent in most third rounds to warrant participation. 1st 2nd and 3rd rounders should be reserved for mainly kids.

not certain but 1st rounders go at over 75% 2nd 60 and third round is about 50%
. the overall succees rate for drafts is over 60% that was a fair while ago.  could be higher now days as drafts and clubs and junior systems become more and more refined.

just to show how  picking individual drafts can skew things just look at 2004. you would be lucky to depending on opinion find 15 good players give or take a few in the entire first 3 rounds of that draft.  the whole draft in fact.
yet we as a club invested heavily in that draft and continued after to trade for payers from it.
imo the worst draft for talent in the last 15 yrs at least and 2003 wasnt far behind it.

finally i dont think we can lose sight of the fact that more and more kids are playing the game and like i said above the systems for identifying kids gets better and better 3 rd rounders will become more and more important. failing to  regularly participate in the third round ids fraught with danger.

Brad Helbig in focus

Tim Clarke says:  “If you look at the games he played and didn’t play throughout the year, it’s all about continuity for Brad.

He plays one or two good games, then he gets injured.  Or, he plays one or two good games, and then plays a half before being injured.

That’s the story of his year.

Tigers re-sign injury-hit midfielder
afl.com.au

RICHMOND has reaffirmed its faith in Brad Helbig, with the injury-plagued midfielder set to re-sign with the Tigers for 2014.

As Richmond finalises its 2014 list ahead of the December 2 deadline, AFL.com.au understands it has agreed to terms with Helbig for next season, with a contract expected to be signed next week.

Helbig, 21, came out of contract at the end of the 2013 season, a year when he played just one senior game, in round five against Fremantle.

Helbig suffered a hamstring injury in that game that ruled him out for the next three rounds and he spent the remainder of the season in the VFL.

He was on the verge of breaking back into the Tigers' team as the finals approached, having been named an emergency for their round 21 clash with Carlton, but suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the VFL a week later.

Helbig has played just 16 games in three seasons at Richmond since being selected with pick No.47 in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft.

When fit, the South Australian is quick, courageous and a fierce tackler.

He made his debut in round one, 2011, and went on to play 10 games in an encouraging first season.

In 2012, an early-season left foot injury sidelined Helbig for two months before he returned to play the Tigers' final five games of the year.

Doesn't play within his limitations.  Tries for all-or-nothing kicks.  When they come off, it looks great.  When they don't, they're absolute shanks.

Are you implying he hasn't fully applied himself yet?
If you are, to be fair to the young fella his body has failed him. Perhaps it's a bit of luck he needs to repay the faith WAT.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
