Who are you going to support in the 2011 Foxtel Cup ?
« on: February 09, 2011, 05:58:15 PM »
Who ? Why ? and do you even care about this new competition ?

I would love it if the 2011 winner could compete in 2012 NAB Cup.

For the record I will be supporting Claremont.

What are the Victorian teams? I like the idea of the competition but know very little about it.

I am interested to see who is the best team outside the AFL.

Would love to see the winner play in the NAB cup.....its like a real life Rocky Balboa / Apollo Creed adventure.
Imagine a second tier team taking on a team like Sydney (a team that has tradionally not taken NAB cup seriously).

I  have been an extremely passionate Richmond supporter all my life... however I have also been a resident of Perth for over 20 years.
Some of the comments regarding the standard of the WAFL in the "Kraks Back" thread  a few months ago I found offensive.Sorry to say this but that thread contained much Victorian arrogance/ignorance.

Cant wait to see how the VFL/SANFL/WAFL stack up against each other. Some of us Oerites might have to eat some humble pie.

Lets not forget that a competiton like this might unearth a "ready made" hidden gem aswell.

Ever since Claremont changed to that Carlton-like jumper :chuck it's hard to treat them as Tigers. Labrador Tigers at least has the traditional Tiger yellow sash.

Probably because Coburg and Richmond listed players won't be in it that Tiger supporters won't take much notice but for the sake of the Game I hope it's a success. This is just another step along with the new NEAFL in further nationalising and attempting to strengthen the game in the weaker states by giving 2nd tier clubs and players and Aussie Rules in general a greater profile and higher standard to play against to play catch up. It also gives the AFL the chance to eventually expand into regional areas such as Cairns for instance who could support a 2nd tier club in something like this and the NEAFL but are unlikely to have finanical and fan support needed for their own AFL club. Rugby League can't copy this format either as the 2nd tier in the southern states is virtually non-existant.

part of the problem is the SANFL haven't committed their top teams, they contingent is made up of 3 of their bottom clubs of 2010

So how can you market it as being the best clbus from the state leagues  :-\

Yep the Central District Bulldogs (SANFL) think they are too good for this competition....How could you blame them ,They have won 9 (yes 9) flags since the year 2000. :gobdrop.

Hopefully in comming years the South Australians will take it more seriously. To borrow a cricket analogy...I remember NSW playing Andrew Johns in a couple of 20/20 games.-No way that would happen now with the introduction of the champions league.

South Aussies alway beat to the sound of their own drum...Remember their reluctance to join the AFL in the late 80,s which nearly saw the Port Adeladie Magpies walk out on the SANFL to join the AFL.

There are so many famous clubs around Australia that play in second tier competitions.Clubs with rich history.
For example the Port Adelaide Magpies have won 36 premierships.
East Fremantle have won 29 premierships and Port Melbourne have won 15 flags.
I look forward to a comp that show cases these great clubs against each other.

Soon we are to be subjected to "manufactured" "soulless" clubs like the Gold Coast and GWS. Clubs like these make me want to vommit. :chuck

Does anyone on OER believe that people living in the suburbs of Parramatta,Blacktown or Penrith give a rats about the AFL.

:thumbsup fully agree there matt

although the port adelaide magpies are a new club. The club that won those flags was Port Adelaide Football club who we now know as the Power in the AFL

It was the Port Adelaide football club that was granted a license to play in the AFL.

The port magpies were a newly club created, in the vein of the souless clubs mat talks about.

They were a seperate identity untill recently when the port adelaide football club took them over, as the SANFL were happy to be rid of the financial basketcase. Originally the other SANFL clubs voted in effect to let them disappear.

the power's website is

portadelaidefc.com.au

and states

Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

Before the alignments I was very passionate about the Williamstown Football Club.

My father was president and I have a lot of friends at the club. I hope they win this competition and I hope they beat Coburg in the VFL Grand Final.

I grew up HATING Coburg and still find it hard to barrack for them in any capacity. I hope they go ok for the RFC listed players and thats as far as I can go with that.
