Plan is perfect Tigers tonic

TERRY Wallace says Richmond's ambitious $6 million Fighting Tiger Fund is exactly what the club needs.

The former Tigers coach, sacked mid-2009, said the plan to wipe out a $4.5 million debt and build a war chest for the future would provide much-needed impetus at Punt Rd.

"It's fascinating," Wallace said yesterday.

"I'm really hoping that they achieve what they want to do because it's clearly what the club needs.

"I think (chief executive) Brendon Gale is the right person for the job."

Wallace spent a year at Richmond as a player in 1987 before returning in 2005 for 4 1/2 seasons as coach.

He said the problem at the time of his arrival was that nothing had changed from his playing days some 18 years earlier.

"I walked back in there and couldn't believe it ... the place had not changed at all," he said. "When we first got in there, there was nothing there. There was not enough money to buy paint just to repaint the rooms.

"We had to go our coteries to get the money for the paint and myself and (then football manager Brian Royal) had to paint all the team rooms, the gym. That's how far behind we were."

Wallace told SEN spending in the football department was equally spbehind.

"We had basically no recruiter, there wasn't one development coach within the footy club, didn't have enough money to have one. No welfare person, no sports psych. You can't compete in a national competition unless you can do it properly."

“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

no it's not , unless Im otherwise mistaken he had Miller and a range of assistants that masqueraded as recruiters and development coaches, sadly they achieved didly sqwat. The only facts are that during his era we had wastes of space in critical posts within the club ::)

As much as everyone hates Wallace, he is right! He is just the last in a long list of coaches who have complained of the same deficits! It does make me wonder though, why come here to begin with? He would have seen these problems when he walked through the joint! The 5 year contract? Coin? Surely he would have got the same money per annum at another club and everyone knows contracts mean little at Punt Road when coaching!

what id like to understand is how does the investment in our football department historically compare to St.Kilda who have played in 7 or 8 of last 10 final series. the crux of it is having quality people in pivotal posts not "good for nothings"

He still took the $3mil

Did you want him to work for free?

Just find it a bit hypocritical. You're happy the club can't afford paint but happy to give a bloke $3m to take us from 16th to 9th and back to 16th?

there wasn't one development coach within the footy club
Including Terry. It might have helped if he got involved with the youngsters a bit more.

Good article though, it will give those that have doubts about the Fighting Tiger Fund a bit of an idea how far behind we are.
And you may not think I care for you

All of this should be further proof that the 2 biggest and powerful recruits our club has done in 20 years is Benny Gale and Dimma.

IMO anyone else would've failed. They are smart people and realised we were streets behind of everyone and now are doing something about it.

Come on lets get serious here. What was it again. Ooh thats right one part time skills coach for the better part of 5 years or was it a p/t weights coach.

That being said if North can play more finals than us that our biggest problem was recruiting and not spending in the football department. FACT

Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

We've always been in the bottom 2 clubs in terms of footy department for as long as i recall and what used to pee me awff the most was that certain other clubs were(and ARE) getting financial assistance from the afl and have been using it to have a bigger footy department budget than us who stood on our own 2 feet! Just wasnt and isnt right!

The bottom line is the footyclub was wrong by appointing an experienced coach like Wallace for 5-600k a season instead of pumping that cash into more development coaches alongside a rookie coach that would've cost 200k a season(hello hawthorn model).... and Wallace is a smart man he wouldve realised he was on a hiding to nothing and never really stood a chance when looking at the whole situation rationally walking in to a place with a lack of support - so both the club and wallace share the balme on this one in my eyes
