Farewell game in round 23 I could handle (just).
Anything else is killing off development of younger options.

Newman is a bit like Hardwick.

Good bloke, has tried hard and given great service, but is no longer the right option.
Who isn't a fan of the thinking man's orange Tim Fleming?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

I really dont get this in light of the earn your place claim.
Surely coming back via the vfl is all part of earning your place, as one cant be judged on matches they HAVEN'T played

No final call, but Tiger Newman keen on 2015 return (afl site)

No final call, but Tiger Newman keen on 2015 return

Nat Edwards
afl.com.au
July 14, 2014

RICHMOND veteran Chris Newman is yet to make a firm decision on his future but hopes his ageing body will allow him to play on next year.

The 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season after signing a 12-month extension in June last year.

The former Tigers skipper hasn't set a timeframe on making a final call but he will sit down with the club in the coming weeks to discuss his future.

"It's a conversation I need to have with the club, and I haven't had that yet," Newman told AFL.com.au.

"At the moment I'm concentrating on playing and getting my body right and being able to play each week.

"I'm hoping it will be an obvious decision if my body holds up well. So we'll just see how we go."

Newman is currently in his 13th AFL season, and has only managed 10 games this year after missing five weeks with a calf injury and another week with a groin complaint.

While the prospect of another gruelling pre-season isn't all that enticing, he says mental fatigue won't be a consideration when he contemplates carrying on into 2015.

"I don't look forward to pre-seasons too much," Newman said.

"But it's not really mental, it's more a physical thing. The body has held up well this year, I've had a couple of minor soft tissue injuries so hopefully they're just isolated incidents and I can get through the rest of the season."

In a season that has fallen well short of expectations at Punt Road, Newman said Sunday's 20-point win over premiership contender Port Adelaide was a clear highlight.

"No doubt [it's the best win of the season]," he said.

"It was going to be a really big challenge for us to beat Port, they're obviously a top four team. We feel like we've been playing some really good footy but haven't really got the reward for effort.

"But it was a really good win ... it means a lot to win that one."
