Patrick Smith dumps Bombers to become a Tiger supporter!

This column's football birthright was Essendon, one legacy that is now entering a fourth generation. It has been a prosperous family tradition, for the club has been mostly dominant and no club has won more than the Bombers' 16 premierships.

However, a tradition that began with my father must end. Sadly. It has become impossible to continue to support a club that acted so shamelessly. The manner in which administrations go about their business should be more important than success on the field. A winter of arrogant manipulation by Essendon means it is impossible to continue a family ritual. You cannot be concerned about what you no longer respect. I don't think my late father would feel betrayed. He would have found it unbearable to stand by the Bombers as well.

So it is time to follow Richmond. An old Bomber, Damien Hardwick, is coach and he appears a man prepared to stand firmly by his beliefs. The club, too, has adopted a philosophy of excellence in everything. It has set itself a daunting standard and will trip up from time to time. But if it is not wilful but a mis-calculation then it loses no ground.

Good luck Tigers. We will be watching with interest. And respect.

Well it does seem we are earning a bit of respect for the way we go about things off the field. That can be gone in an instant though. Time to force some respect on the field. Frankly if St Kilda can do it then anyone can.

Okay, he's upset with how the coaching appointment was made, but it was made by administrators who come and go but "they're not the club".
The club are the supporters, the players, the history, the colours and everything else, not board members or admin exclusively.
They're a huge, important part of it, but they're not the heart and soul of why you love a club. And how you could change is beyond me
