Why did we recruit Houli & Grigg?
« on: March 25, 2011, 12:02:10 AM »
Blair Hartley supposedly spent months investigating other club lists and in the end we had 3 target, Houli Grigg and Sherman. My question is why did we recruit Houli or Grigg? What purpose does it serve? Cant see any real benefits in it although I know that people will say that Houli came for free.

Yes, must go back and check all those posts about Houli's elite kicking skills.
Twice in a row (think early in the last) he had two passes under no pressure and turned over both with shocking kicks into the forward line.

Why did we recruit them?

Well it was either Houli or some kid that wasn't picked up in the best 80 kids in the country.
Grigg is ten times better than Collins.

Pretty common sense I would have thought.

You can't just sit back and hope draft picks will eventually turn you list over and win you a flag. Ask St.Kilda and Carlton how their trophy cabinets are going.

I rate both of these guys, Grigg made a few mistakes but was loads better than Deledio tonight.
Houli was one of our best in the 3rd qtr when we came back.

The Grigg trade was a sideways one - we replace a light bodied yet skillful player who would find the ball spasmodically with a solid-bodied ballwinner with a dodgy kick. Nothing I saw tonight was unexpected. I guess the criticism will be why did we recruit Grigg when one of our mantras is you've got to be a good kick.

I actually really liked Griggs game. 2 turnovers hurt, mind you Cotchin turned the ball over twice, Grigg was under the microscope being a new player and rightly so.

Also remember it's his first game apart of our game plan and also Round 1 of the year and also against his old mob. Can't be too critical of the trade after 1 game.

Grigg was one of the Blues better players and a fit Collins couldn't get into a Carlton side that was missing a few players. The trade is a small win but a win none the less.

You make a good point about if he was too sick he shouldn't have played.

He didn't seem to be limping though

You may not buy that he was sick, but Hardwick just admitted in the press conference that he made a mistake pushing him to play as it turned out the gastro got the better of him and he had to be subbed out. He never planned on subbing off Foley but had to.

Sorry Ramps but this is a dumb, premature thread.

I would think it is just common sense that new recruits would need more than one game to gel with their new team.

Lets see how they are going mid season.

Grigg and Houli not our worst tonight by any stretch.

Houli played okay, showed abit against Carlton Jury still out on Grigg but in Grigg's defence he did get a bit of the ball. With Grigg his possessions need to be more damaging. Having said agree too early to judge these players. They certainly weren't the worst players out there against Carlton.

Gus was the Gus we've come to expect - very poor in places (head dropped a few too many times IMHO), a few good patches but still unable to read the play and get back to cover the hole deep in the oppositions F50 ;D

Foley was sick and Dimma has admitted he shouldn't have played and that he (DImma) made the mistake in playing him

Agree this might be a bit premature, a bit like that poster, can't remember his name, that wanted to trade Jack Riewoldt...  ;D

Grigg (23 touches) and Houli (18 touches) were both good in what they offered. Why recruit Grigg, simple answer is Tuck can not play until he is 40. Grigg offers everything Tucky does, and adds more speed and better kicking. Houli found some nice space and set up a few goals in that 3rd term. I can definitely see why they were both picked up.

For the record, as much as I liked Collins, he had his flaws. Grigg is an upgrade.

I thought Grigg was good bar his kicking and Houli was good in the 2nd half

I like the way Houli plays doesn't shirk a contect. Grigg is quicker than I thought, decision making appeared sound, execution was the problem
