Tigers vs Saints match thread
« on: March 28, 2011, 03:03:54 PM »
So how does everyone think we'll go Friday night? Anyone give us a chance to break our now 8 year hoodoo against the Saints?

The MCG by the way is expecting a crowd of 44,000.

Would think it will be a little bigger than that since it's a home game for both clubs. Perhaps they're only expecting 10,000 St Kilda supporters. Sounds reasonable.

It will be interesting to see how we go at the 'G against the Saints.

I give us a chance if we can break even in the middle and get enough I50's.

If Jack can kick 5 or 6 that should be enough to outscore St.Kilda  ;D

I worked it out ....It has been 7 years ,11 months and 11 days since we last beat St Kilda.Another way of saying that is 2900 days. :help

Saints have now won 13 games in a row against us.....That is the 3rd highest losing streak in Richmond history.

(1) 23 games vs Carlton.1908-18.I know Docker supporters feel bad losing the first 10 Derby's....well Richmond lost its first 23 contests against the blues.Mind you all this started before Jack Dyer was even born.

(2) 16 games vs Hawthorn. When we were shizenhousen in the mid 80's/early 90's we did not beat the Hawks for a decade. We also only beat geelong once between 1986-96.

(3) 13 games vs Saints. 2003 till presant day

Victory on Friday night will be a small step in Richmond restoring its credibility.

Not if the trains on the Frankston line are on the blink.

The "heathens" will be at the Chelsea hotel ordering their $3 Kahlua and milks from 7:30 pm at the over 28's.

It'll be a disappointing crowd is only 44k show up given both set of members can get in. The only thing that will turn people off from going is St Kilda's gameplan  :sleep. Let's all get there Friday night and vastly outnumber the Saints' fans   :gotigers.

We need a banner that has a window drawn on it with the words "St Kilda is now closed"  ;D

People wont go because of the crap that St Kilda dish up - it is awful footy and boring to boot

I actually think if we can play some fast attacking footy we've got the pace to trouble the pathetic rabble

Can we win - doubt it but it would be bloody wonderful if we did

We'll need to combine our speed advantage with quick ball movement. Hopefully our midfield stands up this week so we have plenty of inside 50s. Jack owned the St Kilda defence one-out in both games last year.

Sportal reckons we'll get flogged by 9 goals  :P

WE THINK:
The Saints had to be disappointed with their efforts last week and their dour style plus lurid off-season headlines are starting to grate on their fans, with a poor turnout from them last week. They can start winning them back with a big win here.

The scoreline flattered the Tigers' last week and it is apparent that while this young side may be able to get on top in bursts, 120 minutes of football will find them out more often than not in 2011. The Saints have won 13 straight against the Tigers in a spell heading back to 2003, with an average winning margin of 43 points. Captain Chris Newman is the only player to have experienced a Richmond win over the Saints. Don't expect that to change on Friday.

BETFAIR ODDS: St Kilda $1.27 v Richmond $4.40

FORM - St Kilda: L Richmond: L

SUMMARY

This one is all about the showdown between star forwards and cousins Jack and Nick Riewoldt.

Jack was superb against Carlton in Thursday night's season opener, taking six marks inside 50 for six goals as the Tigers went down by 20 points.

But the young livewire will find it harder this week against St Kilda's famously tight defence.

Last week the Saints allowed Geelong's entire team just seven marks inside attacking 50 for the game, but couldn't quite kick enough goals to win.

Midfield guns Lenny Hayes and Nick Dal Santo started their seasons superbly but St Kilda, as they admitted over summer, need to establish a strong forward target other than 'St Nick'.

A big performance by recruit Ryan Gamble and two or three opportunist goals from Stephen Milne, both kept quiet in round one, would go a long way to seeing the Saints home.

QUESTION MARKS

If Riewoldt doesn't fire, how will they amass a winning score? This question applies for both teams.

Are the Saints still a premiership threat? Not that a win over the Tigers will provide a definitive answer, but a second straight loss would certainly have the doubters surfacing. Ross Lyon's men will be keen to win and win well.

How will the Tigers' young midfielders go? The game will be a tough test for Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin and Reece Conca against St Kilda's established stars of Hayes, Dal Santo, Brendon Goddard and Leigh Montagna.

PREDICTION: St Kilda by 36 points.
