If I didn't know better I'd swear that timekeeper was hanging on until Sandy got their noses in front. Not a hugely high-scoring final quarter, yet somehow inexplicably it ticked over the 32 minute mark, then the air-horn blows just as they kick the winner :(

I remember a U19 GF where the opposition timekeeper deliberately blew the siren two minutes early when he saw a Richmond player running into goal that would've put us in front and won us the U19 flag. IIRC the guy was banned for life but the result wasn't altered (so we lost).

All the players were dead tired today in the last quarter and the game slowed down significantly so there were heaps of stoppages (ball-ups and throw-ins) that would've added time-on. When you're 10 points up with about minute or so left you have to choke to lose from there. Coburg lost close games like that last year as well. From memory Box Hill kicked the winning goal after the siren in the Anzac Day clash last year. Just plain not good enough.

I think it's the opposite.  We beat Box Hill after the siren (Polo kicked the goal)

Yeah, fair enough MT. It was just the way they played it up on the telecast, putting the camera on the timekeepers box, and he just sat there impassively, like he had no intention of blowing the damned thing til they hit the front. And sure enough, the split-second the winning kick came, bluurrtt. I'd been willing the damned siren to go for two minutes, then that. It was so damn frustrating.

Tuck is a warrior too

never said he wasnt a warrior, but he is and 80's 90's player
games too fast for him and he plays old fashioned footy, wins the ball and kicks it in hope

Coburg unlucky in season opener

Sun 03 Apr, 2011

Richmond’s VFL affiliate, Coburg, has suffered a heart-breaking three-point loss to Sandringham in the opening round of the season.

A goal after the siren from Will Johnson handed the Zebras the win after a Shane Tuck goal put the Tigers two goals ahead with less than two minutes to play.

Coburg led at quarter time after a strong start, and kept in touch with Sandringham to three quarter time, when the trailed by just six points.

Two goals to Richmond rookie Pat Contin early in the last quarter helped Coburg take the lead, which they maintained until the last kick of the day.

Jeromey Webberley, Shane Tuck and Ben Nason were the most prolific ball winners for the Tigers, while Andrew Browne was impressive in the ruck and Dylan Grimes rebounded well from half back.

Coburg listed midfielder Nick Carnell kicked four goals for the match, with Brad Miller and Ben Nason booting three each.

The Tigers have the bye next weekend, before taking on Northern Bullants on Sunday April 17.

Final scores - Round 1
Coburg Tigers     7.0, 9.2, 11.7, 16.9 (105)
Sandringham     5.2, 10.5, 12.7, 16.12 (108)

Goal Kickers: N. Carnell 4, B. Miller 3, B. Nason 3, P. Contin 2, S. Tuck 2, J. Post , J. Lawton
Best Players: J. Webberley, D. Grimes, M. Tanner, S. Tuck, B. Nason, N. Carnell

I only watched parts of the last qtr when I got home

But the last 3 minutes were pathetic

With 3 minutes to go and leading by 2 goals you don't lose

Very little defensive pressure by the Coburg mids or defenders in that last 3 minutes  :banghead

And a very stupid free kick to hand the game to Sandy IMHO

VFL Coburg Report
richmondfc.com.au
By Tony Greenberg
3:06 PM Tue 05 Apr, 2011

Development coach, David Newett, provides a summary of how the Richmond-listed players performed for Coburg in last weekend’s opening round of the 2011 VFL season . . .

Will Thursfield  (5 kicks, 6 handballs, 6 marks)
Was solid in defence, with nine spoils and 10 team defensive involvements.  Provided good support to a young backline and used the ball well offensively.

Brad Miller  (7 kicks, 1 handball, 4 marks)
Was able to provide the team with a strong target up forward, despite the opposition constantly dropping numbers back.  Led well and forced a contest when outnumbered, and when the ball was kicked in quickly.  Overall, three goals was a good return from him.

Shane Tuck  (11 kicks, 12 handballs, 4 marks)
Was very good at stoppages with his strong bodywork.  Impressive work-rate throughout (had 10 tackles), showed good leadership in the tight last quarter, and certainly had an impact on the game.

Ben Nason  (10 kicks, 7 handballs, 4 marks)
Started impressively, kicking two goals in the first quarter.  Finished the game with a total of 17 possessions and used the ball efficiently.

David Gourdis  (12 kicks, 4 handballs, 6 marks)
Played deep in defence and did a solid job in denying the opposition for the majority of the match.  Got involved in offensive chains and provided run out of the backline.

Andrew Browne  (6 kicks, 11 handballs, 5 marks)
Had an interesting battle in the ruck and around the ground with promising St Kilda-listed big man Rhys Stanley.  Had 35 hit-outs and six clearances, to be one of the team’s best on the day.

Jayden Post  (8 kicks, 5 handballs, 5 marks)
Was used forward and in the ruck throughout the game.  Had an impact in the last quarter, taking a strong mark and setting up a couple of goals.

Matt Dea  (9 kicks, 13 handballs, 6 marks)
Played a more attacking role in defence.  Accumulated 22 possessions, with seven handball receives, and was involved in several offensive chains.  Looked strong around contests.

Robbie Hicks  (10 kicks, 4 handballs, 2 marks)
Worked hard up forward, without having a major impact.  Had an interrupted pre-season and will benefit from having that game under his belt.

Jeromey Webberley  (17 kicks, 5 handballs, 7 marks)
Very good performance.  Used the many possessions he gathered to the team’s advantage.  Worked hard right throughout the game, running and linking up.  One of the team’s best on the day.

Dylan Grimes  (7 kicks, 4 handballs, 3 marks)
Had another strong defensive game.  Also provided good spread and attack from the backline.

Pat Contin  (12 kicks, 6 handballs, 9 marks)
Started the game slowly, but had a significant impact in the final term, kicking two goals and setting up some others.

Dean MacDonald
Played in the reserves and showed some impressive traits, including a top goal in the first quarter.  Drifted in and out of the game.

Nick Westhoff
Also played in the reserves, where he presented well as a key forward.  Was involved in several of the team’s scoring chains.

Match details (VFL seniors)
Coburg 7.0 9.2 11.7 16.9  (105)
S’ham  5.2 10.5 12.7 16.12  (108)

Goals - Coburg:  Carnell 4, Nason 3, Miller 3, Tuck 2, Contin 2, Lawton, Post.

Best - Coburg:  Webberley, Grimes, Tanner, Tuck, Nason, Carnell.

That player-by-player definitely errs on the positive side. Very kind to a few guys who had a pretty ordinary game.
