Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt's spat put down to concussion
Bruce Matthews
Herald Sun

RICHMOND spearhead Jack Riewoldt was concussed and clearly unfit to return to action against St Kilda at the MCG on Friday night.

That was the verdict from Tigers coach Damien Hardwick and the club's elite performance manager, Matthew Hornsby, who fully supported the decision of the club's medical staff to sideline the reigning Coleman medallist.

The high-flying Riewoldt landed awkwardly in a marking contest in the first quarter and played no further part in the match, despite his protests.

The star full-forward remonstrated with medical staff in the first half, before being replaced by substitute Brad Helbig.

"Being agitated and emotional are common reactions to concussions, and we've seen that on numerous occasions," Hornsby said yesterday. On the club's website, he said: "The decision by the medical team to not allow him back on the field was absolutely the right one. In our view, he was not fit to see out the match."

"The medical staff made the right decision because he definitely had concussion - you only have to look at the video to see him staggering around," Hardwick said.

"Players will always say they are right, but the doctors make good decisions, and that is what we pay them for."

Hardwick said he didn't take much notice of vision of Riewoldt demanding he was fit to return to the action.

"The thing I love about Jack is that he is passionate," he said.

"I didn't take anything from it (his antics). He is a great kid and we move on. You do become irrational (when you are concussed) and it can take a fair bit out of you."

Riewoldt is expected to play against Hawthorn after recovering well yesterday.

"Jack has pulled up well this morning and is showing no ill-effects from his concussion," Hornsby said. "We'll continue to monitor him throughout the week, but at this stage we expect him to play on Saturday night."

Riewoldt tweeted yesterday morning: "Very minimal sleep last night, doc made the right call but as you could see I was shattered that I couldn't play on. The boys made me proud."

Riewoldt: Doc made right call (Age)

Riewoldt: Doc made right call
Chloe Saltau
The Age

JACK Riewoldt yesterday conceded the medical team that prevented him from returning to the field against St Kilda on Friday night was right to withstand his furious protests.

Riewoldt pointed and yelled at Richmond officials at quarter-time, imploring them not to substitute him out of the game after he hit his head hard on the MCG turf when tumbling from an attempted high mark, remonstrating from the bench when the decision was made.

While the Tigers excused his behaviour on the grounds that such agitation can be a symptom of concussion, the irrepressible forward said he was simply shattered when replaced by substitute Brad Helbig during the second quarter of the drawn match.

''Very minimal sleep last night,'' Riewoldt told his Twitter followers. ''Doc made the right call but as you could see I was shattered that I couldn't play on. The boys made me proud.''

The incident provided another dramatic test of the AFL's new concussion guidelines, and came after the league's football operations boss Adrian Anderson called on players, as well as club medical staff and the AFL, to take responsibility for concussion.

In this instance, Richmond doctor Greg Hickey had to withstand significant pressure from the furious player, and later confided in former Tiger champion Matthew Richardson that the decision to keep Riewoldt from returning to the field was the hardest he had made in his career as an AFL doctor.

While Richardson speculated that Riewoldt might have been allowed back on in previous years, the call backed up Anderson's assertion that it is more difficult for players to push the envelope nowadays because the concussion tests used by doctors are more sophisticated.

The Coleman medallist, whose legs were limp as he was helped from the field, reported feeling unwell after half-time, but Richmond expects him to be fit for Saturday night's clash with Hawthorn at the MCG.

''Jack has pulled up well this morning and is showing no ill-effects from his concussion,'' Richmond's elite performance manager Matthew Hornsby said.

''We'll continue to monitor him throughout the week, but at this stage we expect him to play against Hawthorn on Saturday night. Being agitated and emotional are common reactions to concussions, and we've seen that on numerous occasions.

''The decision … not to allow him back on the field was absolutely the right one. In our view he was not fit to see out the match.''

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick also defended the ill-tempered performance of his star player, after the Tigers fought back to draw the match without him. ''That's his passion, that's why he's a good player - he's a passionate kid,'' Hardwick said after the game.

''The doc made a good call; at the end of the day he wasn't right to come back on.''

"I had to pull Jack up a couple of times": Newman

Newy on Ch 7's gameday this morning.....

Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt was concussed during the game and remonstrated with club officials who refused to allow him to return to action.

"I had to pull him up a couple of times," Newman said.

"He was a little bit emotional which is how he plays his footy and how we like it.

"We don't want him to change and go away with that but I think the concussion can have those sort of effects, it was almost like an emotional rollercoaster for him.

I laughed watching a replay when he pointed to the medical staff at 1/4 time saying "don't you sub me off."

(if it had been the st kilda huddle they have replied that they wern't offering  :P)

Jack ready to go (RFC)
« Reply #24 on: April 08, 2011, 02:46:52 PM »
Jack's right to go  :thumbsup

Hardwick said there were no doubts over the fitness of forward Jack Riewoldt, who was subbed out of last Friday's draw after being concussed in the first quarter.

"There's no ill effects. He'll be out here full of beans today and he's ready to go, which is great because people love to come and see him play," he said.

"He's going to give the opposition some headaches again. As we found last week, we spread our goal-kickers around so we'll be looking for a similar result this week."

One of the big positives out of last weeks game was our unpredictability in the forwardline. We still kicked it long into the forwardline but tried to bring it to ground, crumb a goal or keep it in the F50. We had an amazing percentage of entries verus goals at one stage. I would never suggest leaving Jack out but I wonder how this will effect our forward structure, predictability and midfield crumbers?  :-\

I guess that's why Dimma wants Jack to mix it up and at times push up high up towards the 50 arc with Vickery playing out of the goalsquare. I can't really see Gilham or Gibson holding Jack one-on-one. Clarkson will probably start Gilham on Jack and use Gibson as 3rd man up. Whoever gets Gibson needs to play and lead away from Jack. Hodge will probably play in front of Jack in that "quarterback" role he plays although he's underdone. Another reason why it's important to have two leads away from each other as Hodge can't sit in front both. It's then up to our midfield to hit the more open lead.

Stratton will take Jack
I hope so as Jack at 195cm, 93kg would be too big, strong and footy smart for Stratton one-on-one.

Stratton 189cm, 82kg
Gilham  192cm, 86kg
Gibson  189cm, 92kg

Surely Gilham then Gibson would get Jack before Stratton.

Firstly Jack is not 195cm, even he admits that
Also Stratton is a very good up and coming young defender, he doesn't get beaten often
