Richmond laments one that got away

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick said his gutted players believed they should have beaten St Kilda in last night's gripping draw at the MCG.

Hardwick said it was little consolation that the Tigers held out against last year's grand finalists without a contribution from their Coleman Medal winner Jack Riewoldt, who was suffered concussion midway through the opening quarter.

"It feels like a loss," Hardwick said. "We're really disappointed, to be honest. We should have won.

"I know we came away with two (premiership) points, but we've been in winning positions the last two games. We dominated, I reckon, for the last three quarters and just couldn't get the result.

"Our guys have a sensational hunger, they want to win. They've been down for a long, long time and they're a young group who you saw tonight play a great brand of footy.

"They're tired of being down the bottom. We know we're going places, but they're not interested in the draw. They're as disappointed as you will see. They thought they let one slip last week and to let this one slip is disappointing for our guys.

"I was proud of the boys' efforts, but we've still got a way to go. When your full-forward goes down in the first five minutes and there were a couple of things that didn't go our way."

Riewoldt crashed heavily after an attempted pack mark and was dazed when his head hit the turf.

He reacted in dismay when medical staff informed him early in the second term that he couldn't return.

Substitute Brad Helbig came on 12 minutes into the second term, officially ending Riewoldt's disappointing night.

Hardwick was diplomatic over decisions that went against the Tigers, including Luke McGuane being penalised for handballing through a behind in the last term, costing the Tigers a goal.

Hardwick said it was a difficult game to umpire, but was clearly furious in the coaches' box.

"My headset was mystified by the treatment it got," he quipped.

McGuane was reported for rough conduct on Farren Ray in the second term.

We should have won: Hardwick

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick said the Tigers were shattered with Friday night's draw with St Kilda, and would treat the result against last year's grand finalists as a loss.

The Richmond players were clearly disappointed after the match, with captain Chris Newman frustrated by the second game in a row where the Tigers have failed to claim the four points after being in a winning position.

"I know we come away with two points but we feel disappointed with the loss. I think from where we've come from, people will think it's as good as a win," Hardwick said after the deadlock at the MCG.

"It's unacceptable as far as we're concerned. We should have won that ball game. We probably dominated for the last three quarters and we couldn't get the result.

"I was proud of the boys' efforts but they've still got a fair way to go in some areas."

Hardwick admitted his players had come a long way since the first half of last season, when it took them 10 rounds to notch their first win.

However, he said the players had an "insatiable hunger" and simply wanted to win, and wouldn't be satisfied with nearly beating sides like Carlton and St Kilda.

"They've been down for a long, long time, we've got a young group that is exciting, they play, as you saw tonight, a great brand of footy," he said.

"We know we're going places, we know it's going to take some time, but they're not interested in a draw, our blokes. They're as disappointed as you'll see."

He said the club was satisfied with the decision made to rule Jack Riewoldt out with concussion after he whacked his head on the turf in the first quarter.

"At the end of the day, he wasn't right to come back on," he said.

"From our point of view, we lose a good player. We'll lose a battle but we'll win a war with him.

"The doctors made a really good, informed decision and we were happy with the decision he made, and we move on."

It took nearly a quarter for that call to be made, with the Coleman medallist put through vigorous testing before he was told he would be subbed with Brad Helbig under the game's new concussion rule.

Hardwick said Riewoldt's display of frustration on the sidelines after being told to don the red vest was not something he would look to remove from his personality.

"That's his passion and why he's a good player. He's a passionate kid," he said.

"He wanted to win the game, there's no doubt. At the end of the day, I won't take that off him."

This guy is the best coach we have had in many many years. He is honest, to the point and he wants this great team of ours to succeed as much as we do.

Great work Dima, keep it up.. :bow :clapping

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

Hardwick only got a 3 year deal to start with, the truth is the 1st 2 years of it will be spent developing the team. The club should extend him another 3 at the end of this year giving the guy in essence 4 years to continue down this path. Just my opinion.

agreed, progress looks to be on right track but nothing to be gained in extending contract at this point...perhaps if we finished top 4 and went down swinging in a blow for blow pre lim like rocky and apollo creed...yeah sure, extend for another 12 months...at this point lets see how it all unfolds
