Did the earth move for you, baby :-)
« on: February 02, 2005, 07:20:11 AM »
I was up at about 3.00 this morning and heard this explosion.  It didn't sound like an earthquake and the house didn't move, but it was an almighty bang. A mystery as to what it was.  They're trying to work out what it was on 3AW this morning, becuase a lot of people heard it.

I heard on the 8.00am news (3AW) while stuck in traffic :P that it wasn't an earth tremor as first thought as nothing has registered on the Sizemology (sp?) charts.

It appears that lightening hit a power poll and 20,000 volts hitting an live electricity poll had caused a bit of a shudder from Melton to Seaford. The bang they reckon was the thunder from the lightening :help the weather bureau man said that for every lightening strike there is a thunder

At 3.00am yours truly was doing this  :sleep :sleep :sleep :sleep :sleep :sleep :sleep :sleep
"Oh yes I am a dreamer, I still see us flying high!"

I was also  :sleep :sleep :sleep :sleep :sleep.  A bloody eathquake 9 on the richter scale wouldn't wake me.  Most people at work heard it and are discussing it.  No-one knows what it was.  If it was lightening hitting a power poll, then it would have been on the news.  Also the tremor would not have been felt virtually around most of Melb, so I doubt it was that.
Does anyone have half an idea on anything?

I would have hated to be in that area if i heard it over 40ks away lol
It sounded rather loud even though i thought it was a long way away if that makes sense.

I didn't hear a thing  :-[. Think the latest theory is lightning striking a transformer. The do make a loud bang when they pop even if it's only caused by a poor ol' possum but not enough to be heard across town  ???.

the weather bureau man said that for every lightening strike there is a thunder

You see the flash before you hear it. IIRC you tell how far away the lightning is/was from the delay between sight and sound. About 5 miles for every second delay or something like that.
