Lids and Cotch on GWS' top 46 hit list (aflonline)
« on: May 03, 2011, 08:31:23 PM »
Well according to this website they are/were....

Cotch is contracted until 2013 so he's untouchable while Lids is contracted to 2012. GWS have two years to sign uncontracted players (2011-12).

Exclusive: List of potential GWS targets

A HIDDEN list of potential Greater Western Sydney recruits has been discovered, revealing more than 40 current AFL players were on the Giants’ radar.

While many of the players have since been re-signed by their current clubs, more than a dozen on the list have yet to commit, fuelling speculation they may be headed to Blacktown.

High-profile Collingwood onballers Dale Thomas and Scott Pendlebury head the list, which was discovered on the server of a popular AFL statistics website under the file name of “GWS Confidential”.

The file was added in September last year and contains PDF documents with detailed statistics on 46 AFL players.

From Geelong’s Joel Selwood to maligned Melbourne forward Jack Watts, the Giants appear to have had a close eye on every talented youngster in the country.

What do you think? Discuss this in our comments section below or on our AFL forums.

Under AFL rules, the Giants can sign 16 uncontracted players – one from every club – prior to their entry to the competition in 2012.

Most of the big names on the list have since extended their contracts with their current clubs, however there are still plenty of big fish ready to be lured – if they haven’t been already.

No doubt the priority for the Giants will be to sign some bigger bodies, having watched the Gold Coast Suns being bashed from pillar to post early this season.

Taylor Walker (Adelaide), Matthew Leuenberger, Mitch Clark (Brisbane), Cameron Wood (Collingwood), Michael Hurley, Tayte Pears (Essendon) and Alipate Carlisle (Port Adelaide) were all listed in the discovered file.

North Melbourne midfielder Ryan Bastinac, who was fifth in last year’s AFL Rising Star award is also a potential target, while Western Bulldogs youngster Dylan Addison appears to be linked to the new franchise.

Taken with pick 25 in the 2005 AFL Draft, Addison, 23, was born in Sydney and would be hard-pressed to refuse a lucrative offer to return home.

An interesting omission on the list is Collingwood’s Dane Swan who has re-signed with the Magpies but was rumoured to be the Giants number 1 target, maybe he was never in their sights.

Unlike the Suns, GWS can sign uncontracted players over two seasons, meaning stars can be poached by the Giants for the 2013 season.

Gold Coast talent like Charlie Dixon and Brandon Matera would potentially be up for grabs.

Pendlebury and Melbourne up-and-comer Tom Scully are on the Giants’ list, but both are expected to re-sign with their respective clubs within the next six weeks.

Colin Young, the manager of Fremantle young gun Rhys Palmer, recently met with GWS officials in Perth to discuss a potential contract.

There was speculation Palmer had agreed to a four-year deal with the Giants, but the former Rising Star winner denied those claims to the media.

West Coast’s Mitch Brown is another potential recruit for the AFL newcomers, who will be coached by Kevin Sheedy in their inaugural season

I'd be surprised if we lost anyone we didn't want to lose. Why would you want to leave a club like us, with thousands of supporters, fantastic facilities, great young list, best song and a bright future for an interstate start up team in the middle of the rugby heartland, surrounded by people who, at best, aren't interested, at worst dislike you and a future of consistent 100+ point defeats. Money isn't everything.

^ What he said and why would you want to play out your career in front of crowds of 10,000 and probably not play in finals when you have the Tiger army and a finals bonanza just around the corner.
Not just being one-eyed but would be very surised if we lost any of "Stars" meaning top 5

West Sydney is a hole thats a given but Sydney aint.

Just because you play for GWS doesnt mean you live in WS. 30 mins from outskirts of the city id say they will get a few players dont worry about that.

Its no different than players travelling to Seaford.

I don't even know if it would be that far
Could almost say it would be like living as far out as Brighton or Hampton
or going out West either Williamstown or Altona would probably be a better comparison

At peak hour it is a min of 90 mins to drive there. Traffic in Sydney is a nightmare
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

true i forget about that.

I lived in Bondi for 6 months in 2007 for work. Can say i had an amazing time out there. Saw goodesy most days riding his 1995 BMX most days which was a  laugh.

But Bondi is not West Sydney so i take your point.

Yep. Players will want a personal helicopter as part of their package.

Even a helicopter won't help much.  Sydney airport traffic is so bad it'd take you two hours to find a place to land.  They say up here that the speed of traffic around the suburbs is slower now than it was in 1880, when everyone rode horses.  It's hard to see how anyone other than a true mercenary would be attracted to GWS.

Since when do AFL players work 9-5 and need to worry about peak hour?
Also they would be going against the peak hour rush wanting to leave the city early in the morning

Exactly. Buddy as an example lives in Brighton yet travels to Waverly Park for training. Thats an hour in traffic. 30 mins no traffic.

I dont think its as bad as people think. Live in five dock and your good as gold.

They would've learned a lot from GC. Just hope none of our players chase the $$
