Mr Cool excited about 'great win'

IF YOU'RE looking for evenness in a coach, Richmond's Damien Hardwick is not a bad place to start.

Early in the 2010 season, his first at Punt Road, Hardwick was calmness itself as big loss piled in on big loss. When the Tigers began to win games midway through the season, he presented the same implacable visage.

At the MCG today, Richmond had a goal-for-goal tussle with Fremantle for three quarters before clearing ahead in the last quarter to win by 49 points.

Hardwick tried not to make too much of the exciting win against a creditable opponent, but if you looked hard during his press conference, there was just a hint of the mouse who found the cheese.

First, he admitted it was a great win. Then he added that it was the best win in his time at the club.

"The great thing from our point of view is we beat a top four side which we haven't been able to do since my time here so it's a great win for us," he said.

Hardwick said the biggest positives from the game were the spread of goalkickers and the fact that Dustin Martin and Brett Deledio overcame quiet starts to make significant contributions as the match wore on.

While Jack Riewoldt did kick four goals in another strong performance at full-forward, Trent Cotchin and Robin Nahas also kicked four and Tyrone Vickery kicked three. In all, the Tigers had 10 goalkickers.

Of Martin and Deledio he said: "They battled through and made a real solid contribution in the last quarter to help get us over the line."

Hardwick was full of praise for the smalls such as Nahas and Jake King, a pair who again were irrepressible in seeking avenues to goal and fighting hard to keep the ball in Richmond's forward line.

"The thing they do well is they compete and win one on one contests," he said.

"The game now, with the substitution rule, is tightening up a little bit, so the contested ball and tackle effectiveness are becoming key indicators — and those guys do that very well.

"Then when the game does open up, those guys are very, very quick; they really get on their bike. We have been very happy with their seasons thus far."

The forwards' energy and willingness were among the reasons the Tigers managed to pick their way through a defensive zone in the first quarter that Hardwick described as impenetrable. The scores were level at quarter-time, 3.2 (20) to 2.8 (20), but only because of Richmond's accuracy when an opportunity arose.

"We went back to school and managed to find our way through it (the zone)," Hardwick said. "Sometimes young sides do struggle with instruction but to their credit they battled on really well."

Scoring, battling, thinking … the coach was entitled to be in a good mood after his team's victory.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick warns bigger challenges ahead despite big win

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick praised last night's win over Fremantle as the best of his tenure but warned there were bigger challenges ahead.

The Tigers posted their third consecutive victory with a 49-point demolition of the Dockers, who dropped their eighth straight at the MCG.

Hardwick said it was hard to assess his side's credentials.

"It's a great win. Probably the best win we've had our footy club," he said.

"But understand the difference between a Fremantle, no disrespect to them, but to a Collingwood, Geelong (and) those type of teams is another step again.

"We got pumped by those guys 10 goals each probably three or four weeks ago. Once we start getting that, we may get some credibility."

Hardwick was quick to point out there was room for improvement when asked about finals.

The Tigers are on the cusp of the eight with three wins and a draw.

"Look, it is Round 7. At Round 24 we may start to embrace it," he said.

"We've still got a lot of areas that we need to work on. We still give the opposition too many easy scores. We work really hard for ours and then at stages we give away a couple of easy goals.

"We're not getting anywhere near ahead of ourselves, we've got a formidable opponent next week in the Western Bulldogs and we're really looking forward to the challegne again.

"Once we start beating those sides that have had the wood on us, we'll start to think about how far we can actually go."

One aspect of the win that particularly pleased Hardwick was having 10 individual goalkickers.

Trent Cotchin, Robin Nahas and Jack Riewoldt each booted four goals.

" 'Cotch' was going to (Matthew) Pavlich the majority of the night so for him to finish up with four goals was a great result," he said. "Robbie, his formhas raised him up a level in the standard we expect of him. He's making positive steps there.

"Dusty (Martin) had a quiet game and Brett Deledio did, too, but they battled through and made a real solid contribution in the last quarter to help get us over the line."

Hardwick said the Tigers had built confidence from good recruiting and natural improvement.

"The one thing I will say is our playing list, I think, has drastically improved," he said. "We've added (Bachar) Houli, we've added (Shaun) Grigg, Cotchin's become a player we thought he could be.

"He's still got some way to go. Brad Miller's brought in some structure. We've added (Reece) Conca, we've added (Jake) Batchelor and there's been further improvements from Nahas and (Jake) King that has made our list better.

"Our understanding of the way we want to play has improved, defensively we've improved, we've still got a little way to go. But talent-wise ... our coaching department and recruiting department deserve a lot of credit."

The only concern was Matthew White who appeared to hurt a shoulder.

I'm just so impressed with Hardwick. He always says the right thing. He's always just so
honest in his assessment of the boys.

He has them playing for him and most importantly for the jumper and each other. What a transformation this club has gone through since he's been there. Great coach and a great CEO it all makes a difference.
The club that keeps giving.
