Geale joins Aussie boxing legends

Boxing icon Johnny Lewis says Daniel Geale sits comfortably with Australian legends of the sport after his IBF middleweight world title win in Germany.

Lewis and three-division world champion Jeff Fenech have hailed Geale following his 12-round split points win over German Sebastian Sylvester in Neubrandenburg early on Sunday (AEST).

Fenech and Lewis praised the self-effacing fighter, who won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2002 before embarking on a professional career.

Always respectful, softly-spoken Geale gives the impression trash talking would mean chatting to his local garbo - not rubbishing an opponent.

"It just shows you that nice guys don't have to come second," said Lewis, Australia's most successful boxing trainer.

"For us in Australia, we've got to grasp onto Daniel Geale as much as we have any of our legitimate world champions in the past.

"He's proven beyond doubt that he sits comfortably with the real legends of our sport.

"He's a wonderful person, and he's really come of age over the last couple of years.

"He's the one we've got to follow in the next few years, and he's going to be an inspiration to any young kid that does come into our sport."

Fenech said Geale was great and hoped he would get the recognition his achievement deserved.

"He's not as outspoken as some of the others. He deserves all the credit he gets," Fenech told AAP.

Fenech expected great things of Geale after first seeing the Tasmanian as an amateur in his early teens.

"I always thought he had that skill and ability and he deserved to become world champion one day," Fenech said.

Lewis and Fenech praised the professionalism of the Grange Old School Boxing team which had guided Geale to the title.

Hopefully the media give him credit for this win instead of giving Mundine who fights nobody's all hype.

Geale Mundine Rematch
« Reply #7 on: October 18, 2012, 08:39:28 PM »
ALWAYS a beacon for controversy, boxer Anthony Mundine has used the launch of his long-awaited rematch with Daniel Geale as an opportunity to question his opponent's heritage.
When asked today about the fact that Geale, a Tasmanian of indigenous heritage and the current IBF and WBA middleweight champion, wore an Aboriginal flag on his trunks, Mundine said: "I thought they wiped all the Aborigines from Tasmania out.

"That's all I know . . . I don't know, I don't see him representing black people, or coloured people. I don't see him in the communities, I don't see him doing the things I do to people, and fighting for the people. But he's his own man.

"He's got a white woman, he's got white kids. I keep it real, all day every day.

"I respect him as a gentleman, I respect him as a fighter.
"That's why we're here; we're here to settle the score, and see who's going to be the best."
Geale, who lost a controversial split decision to Mundine in 2009, responded to the jibe by saying he was proud of his heritage.
"I have a lot of respect for the Aboriginal people," Geale said. "My heritage is down in Tasmania. I've done a fair bit of research. I love my heritage, and I'm proud to show that. If anyone tries to tell me that I've got no right to do that, then something bad will happen. Trust me."
No date or venue have been set for the fight, although it is likely to take place in January. Mundine was typically outspoken, saying he wanted to "exterminate" Geale.
"I'm looking to dominate the fight . . . and when I'm ready [I'll] finish him," Mundine said.
"I just want to exterminate him. No one can beat me. That's why I took this fight, to prove that the last one wasn't a fluke. I'm going to prove I'm the man."

If I was to say what he did about Geale's wife & children I'd be branded a racist

Mundine's comments were racist and digusting end of story the man is a moron

Ease up, that's just some quality banter before a fight.

Not what Geale reckons based on his interview on SEN a short time ago.

if geale was to belt the crap out of mundine the ring would resemble  a settling pond at Werribee
