Astbury's season unsure

RICHMOND expects to learn today the damage extent to defender David Astbury’s knee.

The former North Ballarat Rebel dislocated his knee early in the opening quarter against Sydney on Sunday.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick voiced initial fears post-match that Astbury’s season could be over but later confirmed the club was unsure until scans were carried out.

Tigers spokesman Adrian Ceddia told The Courier it was a case of “wait and see”.

The 20-year-old Astbury was stretchered from the field less than five minutes into the first term after a collision with Swans midfielder Ben McGlynn.

Astbury was driven home on Sunday night by Richmond staff while the nation’s aviation havoc cut flights from the New South Wales capital.

The Tigers’ playing group found accommodation on short notice and undertook a 10 hour bus trip back to Melbourne yesterday.

Astbury adds to a horror knee injury toll for former Rebels this season.

Astbury has played five matches for the Tigers this season and was recalled to the AFL this week after some fine-tuning in the VFL wiuth Coburg Tigers.

His injury forced the Tigers to do some serious reshuffling on Sunday after the late withdrawal of key defender Luke McGuane.

Brad Miller was pulled from the forward line to play on Swan Sam Reid, who Astbury had been preparing to line-up against. Hardwick said his line-up was unsettled in the 10-point loss.

Dave gone for the year according to Hardwick:

"It's terrible luck for Dave to now be out of the rest of the year with his dislocated kneecap, as he had just regained his place in the side, following a stint back at Coburg, working on some aspects of his game, and we were looking forward to him having an impact during the second half of the season.  But he's a quality young man and we're sure he'll work diligently in his rehab. so that he bounces back in 2012."

Dave had his surgery this afternoon [yesterday].

How do I know this? Well my old man went in for a knee arthroscope today and the person sitting next to him being prepared for surgery before him was none other than young Astbury! Doesn't sound like the nurse knew who he was. Clearly not a tiger fan!

Tigers hopeful for Astbury

Richmond remains hopeful that promising, young key-position player, David Astbury, may resume playing before the end of the season.

Astbury, who dislocated his left kneecap in the opening minutes of last Sunday’s clash with the Sydney Swans at the SCG, underwent surgery yesterday and the Club is uncertain, at this stage, when he will be ready to play again.

“He’s had surgery just to clean up some of the soft-tissue damage that’s associated with that type of trauma, and we’ll wait to get the report from the surgeon to determine a time-frame for Dave,” said Richmond’s Elite Performance Manager Matthew Hornsby.

“Obviously, he won’t be back in the short term, but, hopefully, it’s not the remainder of the season.

“The main thing from a recovery perspective is you lose a bit of strength around the muscles surrounding the knee joint, so the big challenge initially will be just to try and get that strength back and protect the knee joint in the future.”

With the Tigers’ flight plans post-match thrown into chaos due to the airline problems associated with the huge ash cloud from the Chilean volcano, Astbury travelled back to Melbourne by car with one of the Club’s doctors on Sunday night.

“That allowed him to assess the injury, manage the injury, get the scans done first thing the next day, and obviously organise the surgery as well,” Hornsby said.

I Remember Daryn Cresswell doing the same thing a few years ago and watching him whack it back into place himself and keep on playing. He was a tough nut but I hear he is now spending some time in the Jail for fraud.

Astbury has had his surgery and it'll be a 8-9 week turnaround. So not too bad.

Astbury undergoes surgery after dislocating kneecap
Ararat Advertiser
21 Jun, 2011

TATYOON - Former Tatyoon footballer David Astbury is hopeful of returning to Richmond's senior line-up before the end of the 2011 season despite suffering a serious knee injury.

Astbury was stretchered from the SCG less than five minutes into the Tigers' round 12 clash with Sydney after a collision with Swans' midfielder Ben McGlynn.

The youngster underwent surgery last Tuesday to repair soft tissue damage caused by the dislocation of his left kneecap.

He will now endure a lengthy recovery as he looks to build strength in the muscles surrounding the knee joint.

While Richmond initially feared the injury would sideline Astbury for the remainder of the season, elite performance manager Matthew Hornsby has assured fans on the club's website that the 20-year-old can bounce back.

It was an agonising week for Astbury who was forced to travel back to Melbourne with the club's doctors by car after flights out of Sydney were cancelled due to ash cloud from the Chilean volcano.

Once back in Victoria, he was quickly booked in for scans and surgery.

Astbury played 17 senior matches in his debut season last year and had just returned for his fifth AFL game of 2011.

He was recalled for the clash against Sydney after a short stint in the VCFL with the Coburg Tigers.
