Disciplined Hardwick stays the course
By Paul Daffey
7:48 PM Sun 12 Jun, 2011

RICHMOND coach Damian Hardwick has maintained an extremely disciplined line this year. After every match, he says his team learned a lot from the day's events but there's still a long way to go.

He makes a point of praising the opposition's best players, partly to deflect attention from his own players, but also because he respects those players.

Sometimes he praises his own players; he's actually more willing to single out players than most coaches.

After Sunday's match against the Sydney Swans, which the Swans won by 10 points, he went through all those steps—but he also admitted to regretting a missed opportunity.

"We've let two games slip over the last two weeks that we possibly could have nailed," Hardwick said.

(The other was the 15-point loss to Port Adelaide at TIO Stadium in Darwin before the bye, in round 10.)

Against the Swans, Hardwick admitted the Richmond camp was excited at three-quarter time. The Tigers had kept the Swans goalless in the third quarter; they were only six points behind; and they were kicking to the scoring end.

Dynamic midfielder Dustin Martin fuelled the excitement when he kicked a goal from 45m out to level the scores. The Tigers then edged ahead through a behind.

Then the Swans returned fire.

"I think those couple of goals against the flow of play hurt us," Hardwick said.

"They (the Richmond players) will gain from the experience. They were playing against a good side in Sydney, who are in the top six, but we'll look at things and get better.

"We just need to work on the consistency of our ball club. Certain players are getting where they need to go, but other players need to step up as well. "

Hardwick made special mention of the Swans players who stepped up when the team needed a shot in the arm in the last quarter.

He praised Ryan O'Keefe for his long goal, which turned the game, and Adam Goodes for fighting through a quiet patch and guiding his team towards victory.

Of his own players, he returned to another favourite theme: that the Tigers have improved through recruiting select players from other clubs.

"There are some really positive signs. I thought Bachar Houli was again terrific today; the addition of [Shaun] Grigg has been another positive step; Mitch Farmer today showed why we got him last year. I thought he was outstanding also," Hardwick said.

"We've added to our talent; we've got players who've improved; but we still understand that we need to take the next step to mix it with the big boys."

I know that I didn't like farmer early on but I'm beginning to see why he might be valuable down the track. If he justs kicks the ball more than he handballs he will be a good player.
Miller is a complete waste of time in the senior team. I don't care about structure if that's the only reason he's in the team then why not just put Griffiths straight in even if he's not ready?

I forgot to add that Hislop is and always will be a VFL player. He's not up to it. He looks like he's way out of his depth. He is a waste of time and energy and resources the club could be using to develop someone with some footy ability.

If you really don't know the answer to that then you have NFI.

Tiger coach rues a win that got away
Martin Blake, Sydney
June 13, 2011

A BRAVE and competitive Richmond came within a few points of pulling off an upset over Sydney at the SCG yesterday and coach Damien Hardwick later locked up his players for half an hour, presenting it as an opportunity lost.

Hardwick was annoyed that the Tigers let the game slip when they hit the lead at the two-minute mark of the final quarter in driving rain. They had trailed all day and appeared to be running over the tough Swans. But Sydney responded with three goals in three minutes, including a long, running shot to Ryan O'Keefe, to close out a deserved victory. Yet even at the end, Richmond was finishing stronger, falling short by 10 points.

The Tigers have hit the midway point of the season at 4-6-1, sliding to 11th on the table with the second consecutive near-miss. Adding to the pain, the club was trying to find a way home to Melbourne last night after flights were cancelled because of a volcanic ash cloud from South America.

Hardwick, watching from the boundary in a slogging last quarter, was convinced his team was about to pull off its first win in Sydney since 2004. ''I thought we had the scoring end,'' he said.

''Those couple of goals against the flow really hurt us. The error on the goal line [Bachar Houli and Matt White failing to prevent a Sydney goal] was costly and there was another one where Alex [Rance] probably made the wrong decision, didn't quite sit on the ball. They're mistakes those guys will learn from. They're playing a good side in Sydney who are top six. We'll learn and get better.''

Richmond was not helped by the third-minute injury to defender David Astbury, who dislocated his left kneecap in a tackle by Sydney's Ben McGlynn and was stretchered off. Astbury, returning to the team after a spell in the VFL, is likely to miss the rest of the season.

''It's hard to say it's a step forward,'' said Hardwick. ''You still lose. But the way the guys are fighting, they don't give up, which is a real credit to them. You look at the Swans, and when the chips are down their good players stand up. O'Keefe delivered, [Adam] Goodes was good in stages as well. Certain players are getting where they need to go but there's certain players that need to step up as well. There's things we'll learn from the game that we need to take into next week and we'll go onwards and upwards from there.''

Hardwick sees gains being made at his club. ''There's no doubt we've improved. We go back at the tapes and look at last year and we are a by far superior side than last year. But we still understand we've got a hell of a long way to go. The errors that we make are still too basic at times and they cost us dearly on the scoreboard.''

why Al. Miller is pathetic. How can Griffiths on a struggling 1 leg do any worse than Miller.

Seriously wake up pal

Bringing Griffiths in before he is back to full strength and full fitness would be a gross dereliction of duty Daniel.  We would be taking a huge risk on re-injuring him and potentially ending his career before it even starts.  I know he is light years ahead of Miller in potential and value to the team but we just have to ride this through until Griff is 110% ready to go.  We aren't headed to a GF any time soon so there is no rush, let Miller take the knocks in the short term.  And I still think he provides a good foil to Jack when he plays in the forward line - he was only put in the backline yesterday because of the forced changes (McGuane and Astbury) and if the coaches had a functioning crystal ball then I'm sure they would have taken Post or even Gourdis to replace McGuane.  We badly missed Miller in the forward line yesterday - Jack was getting double and triple teamed all day.

I hate to admit it, I cannot stick Miller  but you're right smokey, great post
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

It's not the first time this year we have got away without being copmpletely smashed on the scoreboard either.

Actually this was one of the most frustrating parts of yesterdays game

jack's getting triple teamed and where were our smalls.

Jake was tagged big time and was poor (but kudos for not blowing your stack Jake with all the man handling), where was Nahas. Unfortunately Tyrone, still hasn't learnt he needs to lead in the oppositie direction to Jack, not 15 metres off Jack

Truth be told we didn't have many good players yesterday, still staggered we managed to get so close considering how poorly we played
