You don't improve past 24.
« on: July 17, 2011, 07:02:15 PM »
A Collingwood assistant coach told a tour of the Westpac centre I was on that they pump the development time into every player on their list until they hit 24.

After 24 they have found that what a player is he is. Improvement past this point, bar getting a better run with injuries, is not achievable enough to warrant putting the resources into them. The only exception is ruckman who seem to need an extra pre-season or two to develop their bodies.

Therefore players are assessed at 24 in terms of the value they have as players and are kept or moved on.

So who on our list is that age or close:

White
Webberly
Tuck
Thursfiield
Newman
Nahas
Morton
Moore
Miller
McGuane
King
Jackson
Houli
Hislop
Grigg
Foley
Edwards
Farmer
Connors

Not many keepers in that list for mine.

Wait TBR that's Collingwood. This is Richmond and here you do. We'll hoard you on our list like some psychotic middle aged spinster with her newspapers and then when we catch fire we can watch it all burn to the ground.

At 24 you get a slushy 3 year contract on megabucks close to 1 million with benefits to get your 18 posessions at 63% efficiency 2 tackles 4 clangers and 2 behinds so that you can be called classy and highly rated.

i think the only caveat to that would be that up until 24 they had half decent development, which is highly debatable for RFC players.

i think that it would be hard to argue against the concept though.

Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

the flip side to that is you cant develop players who lack in the basics. you do know very few at any club once they turn 18 have dramatic improvement in things like kicking .

well said here is the real problem of the rfc atm. imo you can add several others as well they are just too deficient in so many areas.
people ask why we cant develop players well the truth is we keep on investing in players who lack the basics at 18 and no matter what development you put in they cant be significantly improved.we do it with mature recrits as well if they do have good skills they usually lack in a major way in other areas.

A fairly comprehensive list but even teams like Collingwood have role and depth players. I see players such as Newman, Nahas, King, Houli, Grigg and Foley as these types. The remaining 13 players are tradable or need to be delisted. It would be nice to have a squad full of stars but it never happens.

I'm holding out for the theory that the development BEGINS atb24, what would the Pies know? :gotigers
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

Pies list:

Ball
L Brown
N Brown
Buckley
Cloke
Davis
Dawes
Dick
Didak
Goldsack
Johnson
Jolly
Krakouer
Macaffer
Maxwell
O'Brien
Pendlebury
Reid

Now apart from Buckley and maybe Dick, I'd take all of those players above all the equivilant types on our list, bar Newman.
