We're on track: Hardwick
By Adam McNicol

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick believes his team's upset 43-point win over the Sydney Swans at the MCG on Sunday shows it is on the right track.

The Tigers' victory snapped their six-game losing streak and seriously dented the Swans' finals aspirations.

"For the playing group, it's probably reward for effort," Hardwick said.

"There's been times when we've played OK and times when we've been disappointing, but the guys at no stage have lowered their expectations of each other.

"They've always been up and about, which is a real credit to them. It was really good for their self-belief to have a good win today."

Richmond started full of running but kept the Swans in the contest by continually turning the ball over.

However, the Tigers clicked into gear late, booting six goals to two in the final quarter.

"I think our skill-level has been OK at times," Hardwick said.

"There's certain times, obviously, when it's fallen away, but I think … when the self-belief starts to creep back in you're probably a bit more proactive than reactive, and that's what sort of came to the fore.

"That was like we were playing in the first 10 rounds of the year, which was really exciting for our fans to see."

Here's the video of Dimma's press conference in full...

Dimma compared our season this year to Hawthorn's in 2006 where they started the season well winning 4 out of 5 then falling away badly in the middle of the year before finishing the year off strongly winning their final 4 games for a total of 8 wins.

Damien Hardwick wants Richmond's win to set the scene

    Rod Nicholson
    From: Herald Sun
    August 15, 2011

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick hopes the upset win against finals aspirant Sydney will be a catalyst similar to one that propelled Hawthorn to premiership glory in 2008.

Hardwick, who was assistant to Alastair Clarkson at the Hawks before taking over the Tigers last season, said Richmond had endured a year that mirrored Hawthorn's in 2006.

"It happens with a young group. We did well early this season (four wins and a draw in the opening nine matches), but a young group needs to iron out inconsistency to become a top side," Hardwick said, indicating that was the situation at Hawthorn two years before its ultimate glory.

Yesterday's 43-point win was the tonic Hardwick and Tiger fans had been waiting for since they last tasted victory, in Round 13 against the Brisbane Lions.

"The win-loss column is easy (for critics) to look at, but we look at other things. We have had the most games played by players under 23 and that will take us a long way to where we want to go," Hardwick said.

"For the playing group, (this win) was a reward for effort.

"The guys haven't lowered their expectations or training standards. The win is good for their self-belief.

"We still make some horrendous blues, but that happens with a developing young side. Losses to the Gold Coast and Port Adelaide in games we expected to win was disappointing, but I think that is much to do with inconsistency of a young group learning the game."

Hardwick cited Dustin Martin, playing only his 40th game yesterday, as a classic example.

"He is reflective of the blues and the inconsistency. He missed a couple of chest marks and made some blues, but he never gave up trying," he said of 20-year-old Martin, who finished the match with 17 disposals, two goals and three behinds.

"Our intensity was back today. It is hard to sustain for a long period, but the defensive pressure and tackling was as good as it has been all year."

The coach was pleased the players were dogged and tenacious and that they showed flair when victory was up for grabs.

Hardwick paid special tribute to Alex Rance, who was greatly responsible for curbing the brilliance of Adam Goodes.

"A lot of people had doubts, including me, but to see the way the guy competed against a Brownlow medallist was exceptional. He will be a long-term player for us," he said.

Tigers a work in progress
Martin Blake
August 15, 2011

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has pleaded with supporters to have patience with the rebuilding program at Punt Road.

After one of the season's best wins, a 43-point hiding of finals aspirant Sydney, Hardwick said the Tigers were improving, even though they will miss the finals.

''The win-loss is the easy column to look at,'' he said. ''There's underlying factors there that we believe we're going in the right direction. I think we lead the league in games given to kids under 23; there's certain other stats we look at that we know by history, that will take us where we need to go.

''So we just need to be patient, but the reality is that wins take off the pressure and drive guys to get greater success. That was the pleasing thing today,'' he said.

Hardwick compared Richmond's status with the 2006 Hawthorn team, where he was an assistant coach. He said the rollercoaster rides associated with young teams were inevitable.

''We as a whole have stuck fast to the way we want to play, we've tried to implement certain things, we've changed a couple of things up. The overriding factor is the playing group itself has never dropped its enthusiasm, its intensity at training. You're just glad they get some reward for effort.''

Hardwick praised the efforts of defender Alex Rance for his job on Adam Goodes, who was dominant in the first quarter. ''We've found a player there, there's no doubt.''

He was also rapt with onballer Trent Cotchin's leadership in ''single-handedly at stages getting us going''. The only downer of the day was a shoulder joint injury to Jake Batchelor, who is in doubt for the rest of the season.

''The guys at no stage have lowered their expectations of each other, lowered their training standards,'' he said. ''They've always been up and about, which is a real credit to them. It was really good for their self-belief to have a good win today.

''I think our intensity was back. Obviously with a young group it is hard to keep that for a sustained period of time. Look at the Bombers, been outstanding the last three weeks and hopefully ours will go onwards and upwards from here. Our defensive pressure was back our tackle pressure was back and our ability to hunt the ball was back.''
