Hampson and Blues talks stall

CARLTON big man Shaun Hampson has put contract talks on hold fuelling prospects he could leave the Blues.

Hampson, 23, is understood to be in the sights of Richmond and St Kilda for more front-line ruck duties than if he extends his blossoming career at Carlton.

The Blues have improving big man Robert Warnock and potential star ruckman-forward Matthew Kreuzer as their priority lead ruck pair, which has stalled prospects for Hampson to become a frontline Blues on-baller.

Hampson is the boyfriend of supermodel Megan Gale, who is an unabashed Blues fan.

Hampson had been expected to agree to a new deal in recent weeks as he concluded rehabilitation on a knee injury that threatened to end his season three months ago.

But it is understood Hampson has not been willing to discuss any new deal with Blues officials.

Hampson has not played since Round 13 when he tweaked knee ligaments against Sydney at Etihad Stadium, a week after Kreuzer resumed from a year out of action recovering from his anterior cruciate ligament injury to his knee.

Hampson’s three outings just before his season-threatening injury had been the finest of his blooming 44-game career.

He rattled up 12 disposals and made 34 hitouts against Melbourne in Round 10 and then a career-high 36 tapouts and 13 disposals the next week against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium and then 22 taps and five tackles against Brisbane.

His superb month of June was ironically leading the Blues ruck division when Warnock was sidelined after suffering a heavy bout of concussion.

Richmond is expected to enter the market for a lead ruckman to bolster their strength and grunt around the ball.

Tigers football management is believed to have cleared way in the salary cap to afford a capable big man to bolster their potentially exciting ground level on-ball brigade headed by top draft picks Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin.

The Tigers are also expected to be in the hunt for a powerhouse defender to play on opposition power forwards in support of reliable defenders Alex Rance, Luke McGuane and Will Thursfield who have battled out of their weight divisions this season.

In all seriousness, Hampson would be a much better choice than the other hacks that have been bandied around - Maric, Blake, Simpson, Clark etc.

Hampson would be good at centre bounces. Don't want Maric, he's barely better than Graham. Dunno why we are looking for a defender though. It's time to develop Post and Grimes, not to get another defender to stunt their development

Thursfield, McGuane, Moore, Rance, Astbury, Post, Grimes are all considered "tall" defenders.

Who are they going to delist or trade?

For me, McGuane has a year on his contract and can't be delisted? Traded?

Thursfield? Post?

Rance is now safe as well as Grimes.

Is Moore's injury worse then Richmond think?

Astbury ... not too sure with him.

There are players there to play with so if we want a powerhouse tall defender, we "should" be making room for that player and not so much a Ruckman who we can trade for.

The only defender i can think of that is out of contract that i would consider recruiting would be Carlile (25 years old next year) from Port Adelaide.

The dream would be trade Edwards and Nason for him, while we give Graham and Browne to West Sydney for a draft pick and give that to the club we trade with for that ruckman.

We have to keep one of Graham or Browne, we will be shooting ourselves in the foot if we trade for an injury prone ruck and don't keep anything in reserve. I would expect us to still have 3 ruckman on our list next season possibly 4.

I dont think Graham will make it,unless he makes some serious changes to his gamestyle over the pre season.Just my opinion but his centre square work seems quite bad,and his coverage around the ground is also not up to scratch.
As for browne he still has another year or two of development left so might still make it,however if i had to take a punt at this stage i would say no(hope i am so wrong on this).
Theres also derickx,who i havent seen enough to make a serious judgement on.I did see him twice in the magoos earlier this year,and seemed very slow and lethargic,however this could have been due to lack of match practice and injury.
The upshot i reckon is we need a ruckman who can walk into the team and ruck.This obviously means at least one of the above will probably get the boot..to be honest dont really care which of the above goes.
