Pies eye showcase return to MCG
08 March 2005
Herald Sun
Damian Barrett

COLLINGWOOD is frontrunner to host the biggest home-and-away match of next season – football's return to the MCG.

The Magpies intend to speak with the AFL about involvement in the game – most likely a Friday night match – which could draw a capacity 100,000 crowd.
....
Richmond is also unlikely to be considered, as Collingwood was angered last year by the Tigers' decision to renege on a gate-sharing initiative.

The Scum - what a joke.

They would not want to consider the tigers as we would give them a good shake.

Well considering the draw isn't done until near the end of the season and all teams will put in their wish lists ....  ::)

Fair dinkum the Pies - you've gotta laugh don't you, getting in early with their big generous brainwave :o

Blind Freddy could tell you that the first game at the MCG in 2006 after the Commonwealth Games (new look stadium) is more than likely going to involve two of the following teams: Essendon, Richmond, Carlton, Collingwood or St Kilda.

Do the Pies really think the AFL haven't thought of this already :scream :scream

Sharp as bowling balls down at the old Lexus Centre

Geezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :lol :rollin :lol :rollin :lol :rollin

Wouldn't discount Melbourne from being involved considering the MCG has been their home from day 1 and the MCC is likely to have a say. Collingwood have been there 5 minutes and are acting like they own the joint.

As for the gate sharing, I've heard we were losing out on it so Ian Campbell informed the Collingwood CEO several months before the 2004 round 1 match that it would not continue.
That king Ed was only informed a week or so before the game and got his nose out of joint is not our fault. We didn't renege on the deal, there wasn't one anymore.
That's my understanding of it anyway, and credit to Ian Campbell for doing the right thing by the club. The bummer of it this year is we only play the Skunks once and it's their home game so they get all the gate takings.

Does this mean they’ve officially taken over running the AFL draw?  ::)

Hard to argue with that sort of logic CUB. :thumbsup

I was thinking along similar lines FF. Seeing as Melbourne and Richmond were the first co-tenants at the ‘G’, as RFC had the foresight a few decades before anyone else to move there, it could be fitting that this be the first scheduled game there next season.

Our draw for next season will probably be determined by how we go this season.  Because of our cactus 2004, this year we seem to have been banished to Sundays, of all days.

That's how I understood too FF. The Pies had a larger number of reserved seats so we were losing out in the deal.
