Dustin Martin burns in Tiger time-trial

RICHMOND players made the annual walk down Olympic Boulevard for fitness testing at The Tan around Melbourne's Botanic Gardens.

And coach Damien Hardwick said the results were impressive as the majority of the list - who have returned to training during the past two weeks - completed the session.

Midfielder Matt White showed he had endurance as well as speed to burn, coming in well ahead of his teammates around the 13-minute mark.

Other notables included Bachar Houli (third), Dustin Martin (sixth) and Brett Deledio (seventh).

Martin returned to pre-season training out of shape last year, but there were no signs of puppy fat this morning.

"We were really impressed with the times that they ran,'' Hardwick said.

"Dustin Martin last year ran just over 15 (minutes) and this year he ran just over 14 so we've been really impressed with the way they've come back."

One absentee was hard-nut Jake King who suffered a knee injury while playing for Australia in the International Rules series.

But Hardwick said he was confident the injury would have no long-lasting effects.

"During the year it would probably be a three-four week injury, so he's fine,'' he said.

"I think early next week he'll be back in training, he's a pretty fit guy anyway so he'll be back annoying the hell of us soon.''

Jackson would normally do better than this. He hasn't returned to pre-season in top shape and to be honest we should rip up his new contract.

It just reeks of Craig Cameron.

Agree :cheers He even said himself on the wireless yesterday that he ate to much on his trip to New Orleans >:( This is a blatant breach of contract and he should be disciplined immediately ;D ;D

Martin on the run
By Jennifer Witham
Fri 11 Nov, 2011

RICHMOND midfielder Dustin Martin slashed a minute off his previous fastest time for a lap of Melbourne's Botanical Gardens' Tan circuit as the Tigers trained on Friday morning.

Coach Damien Hardwick hailed the form his players showed, with Martin recording just over 14 minutes for the 3.8km run.

Matt White came first, followed by delisted rookie Pat Contin, who is still training with the club.

"We've been really impressed with the way they've come back," Hardwick said.

"They've been really diligent in coming in to the club over summer, which is what we expected, and we're hoping to see the dividends over the course of the pre-season.

"We've set some pretty lofty ambitions for a lot of our guys and they've come back in reasonably good shape, which is great."

Defender Bachar Houli came third in the run, with Martin, Brett Deledio and Daniel Jackson finishing shortly afterwards.

New recruits Ivan Maric and Steven Morris, son of dual Richmond premiership player Kevin, also impressed with middle of the pack finishes.

"[Morris] is a competitive beast, we've seen that already in couple of sessions," Hardwick said.

"His competitive nature is going to be the thing that gets him to where he needs to go.

"We'd be disappointed if he didn't play some form of senior footy this year, and Ivan is another very competitive individual and that's what we're after.

"We've got to improve in a number of areas and that's one of them and why we got him across to our footy club."

A dozen players were absent from the run, including forward Jack Riewoldt, captain Chris Newman, defender Kel Moore and recent International Rules representative Jake King.

Here's some vision of the frontrunners in the Tan trial and Dimma giving an interview.

Dimma said the two years of development is over so players are going to have to earn their spots. We'll be putting out as an experienced line-up as we can each week. We're upping the ante of their training without overtraining them and we expect to improve on 2011.

In the 3.8km time trial in warm conditions on Friday morning Matthew White impressed with his time of 13 minutes and four seconds, finishing ahead of delisted rookie Pat Contin (13.44), who is still training with the club, as well as Bachar Houli (13.45) and Shane Edwards (13.56).

Hardwick was impressed with the performances of all his players but singled out young gun Dustin Martin, who slashed his personal best time around the iconic Botanic Gardens circuit by more than a minute from 12 months earlier.

"Yeah really good, we were very impressed with the times they ran," Hardwick said.

"They've been really diligent even coming in through the club over summer which is what we expected and we're hoping to see the dividends over the course of the pre-season."

"We've set some pretty lofty ambitions for a lot of our guys and they've come back in reasonably good shape which is great."
