Who are the best athletes at your AFL club?

by: Matt Windley
From:Herald Sun
December 12, 2011

AFL players are great athletes, but have you ever wondered who would come out on top if they were pitted against each other in a mini-Olympic Games?
MATT WINDLEY scoured Victoria's clubs to find just who might have the goods if they tried their hand at one of several individual disciplines.

RICHMOND

Elite performance manager MATT HORNSBY

Middle distance running: Matt White and Dan Jackson hold the club record around the 3.82km Tan track, finishing side by side in 12min 36sec last year.

Sprints: Brett Deledio, set to be released to the midfield next year, is the quickest going around at Tigerland. Skipper Chris Newman is not far behind.

Swimming: Brett Deledio and Dustin Martin are self-confessed "bricks" in the pool. Ruckman Angus Graham and the man who looks set to take his job, fellow ruckman Ivan Maric are the best in the water.

Cycling: We don't do a lot on the bikes, but Nathan Foley has stunned the club's fitness staff during his lengthy rehabilitation from ankle and achilles surgery with his endurance work on the rowing machine.

Weights: Defender Luke McGuane is the club's strongest man, bench pressing 150kg-plus. The speedy Matty White is the strongest pound for pound.

Boxing: No surprises here. Jake "The Push Up" King is the club's best fighter. King is mates with champion fighter Sam Soliman, who joined the team in LA last week. Shane Tuck and Tyrone Vickery, the son of the club's boxing coach, are also pretty handy.

highly doubt that, he gets blown away off the mark whenever he plays on the small nippier fwds, and he's only gotten older since then  ;D. Off the top of my head, Martin, King, Foley, White, Houli, Nahas, Conca, Grimes all look a lot sharper and quicker off the mark for mine

so matt hornsby is lying?  ::)

what does reaction time against an opponent have to do with time on the sprint track?

i have seen angus drown whilst attempting breast stroke in the ruck so maybe i should doubt the veracity of Hornsby's claims too

lol FFS.. Newman is not quicker than King, Foley, White and martin, no chance none. He gets blown away by his opponents in foot races all the time.

what do sprint tracks have to do with it? its all about speed off the mark and reaction time in footy, thats the speed that counts on field.

I get it, he must wear cement boots onfield bc he looks pedestrian against the likes of garlett, betts and co, and running gear on track bc there hes "not far off Lids" who is nigh on the quickest in the comp

give me a break  :lol

I actually don't think Martin is that quick speed wise but is quick on his feet

what do sprint tracks have to do with an article about which players are athletes outside of the football field? eff I dont know tony montana  ::)

newman gets beaten by his opponent not because he isn't quick but because his reaction times are slow and he's not a great defender

none of which has anything to do with this article of newman's ability to run sprints
