Richmond to grab former Collingwood midfielder John McCarthy by: Michael Warner
From: Herald Sun
December 12, 2011 11:30PMAXED Collingwood midfielder John McCarthy will become a Tiger today, barring a last-minute change of tack by Port Adelaide.
McCarthy, 22, will account for one of just 11 selections in the AFL pre-season draft.
But GWS could shorten the draft even further by passing on as many as four of its first six selections.
Richmond has committed to taking McCarthy and does not expect the Giants or Suns to swoop and hopes the Power will overlook him as well, with delisted North Melbourne player Gavin Urquhart its likely choice.
Gold Coast is keen on talented Hobart utility Aaron Hall, who has been training with the club.
Former Saint Zac Dawson appears certain to reunite with coach Ross Lyon at Fremantle with pick 10.
The Bulldogs will complete the draft by selecting a TAC Cup player overlooked in last month's national draft.
Clubs will then cast the talent net wide with as many as 80 rookie draft picks.
Former St Kilda forward Andrew McQualter will be rookie-listed by Gold Coast to fill a leadership role in the club's reserves team in the AFL's Northern League.
Today's drafts loom as the final chance for Brendan Fevola and Andrew Lovett to resurrect their AFL careers but neither is expected to find a home.
The AFL career of All-Australian Leon Davis, 30, also appears over. But former Hawk Travis Tuck, the game's first player to be outed for three illicit drug strikes, has been linked to a rookie spot at Melbourne.
