The AFL and Australia Post have joined forces to connect individuals and communities through their love of football.

The Australia Post Community Inclusion Partnership with the AFL will involve AFL community camps with teams visiting local schools and communities in each state and the first ever schools letter writing program with a special focus on football.

AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou said the AFL was proud to partner with Australia Post.

“The partnership will encourage AFL fans to support inclusion in their community through fun and educational activities,” said Mr Demetriou.

Australia Post Managing Director and CEO Ahmed Fahour said Australia Post was excited to be working with the AFL to bring young Australians together, irrespective of backgrounds and beliefs.

“We are a part of every community in Australia and are uniquely placed to work with the AFL in this way. We want to create united and inclusive communities across the country, where individuals and groups can thrive,” said Mr Fahour.

“Team sports, like Australian Football, have the great ability to bring people together and our partnership will show young Australians what great things can be achieved when we all work as one team.”

The Australia Post Community Inclusion Program comprises three main initiatives:

Australia Post AFL Community Camps

AFL teams will visit communities throughout Australia to promote social cohesion, encourage participation in Australian Football, conduct training sessions and visit schools, nursing homes and hospitals.

Pretty sure this bloke was CEO of the NAB when NAB first signed on as an AFL sponsor

IIRC we last visited Mildura and played a preseason game up there back in 2006? as a charity event in memory of those four teenagers who were all killed in that well-publicized at the time shocking car crash (in Red Cliffs from memory?).

The Mildura area was part of our old country zone so there's plenty of Tiger connections and following up that way. Knighter of course came from Merbein.

It's around about a 7 hour drive from Melbourne to Mildura one way  :P. Hopefully someone here, a local radio station or RFCO can provide us with updates if we play a preseason game up there again.

They wont play a game.

Essendon is coming to our club and it is all clinics, school visits and training.

Yeah but as part of training you can a have drills that are based on match conditions, a "scratch match" sort of thing

Actually just thinking about it considering the camps on during the week they have their "bye" in Rd 1 of the NAB cup, then perhaps they will play an intra-club scratch match

Yep the old clayton's scratch match so you get around the AFL's rules. it might be a 3/4 match or a match with 10 min quarters or one where there's no scoreboard.

The players will visit a series of schools, hospitals and retirement villages, take part in football clinics and conduct a main training session.

A civic welcome and public autograph session have also been planned.

Most of the squad is flying up Mildura today. However Rance and a couple of others are heading to Alice Springs while a couple are even flying to India.

From RFC twitter:

"he's [Rance] going to Alice with a few others, the rest to Mildura"

"we're sending them far and wide, even a few off to India today!"

"Plenty of money raised for local Mildura footy tonight. Heaps of memorabilia from Newman, Riewoldt, Cotchin and Hardwick helping the cause! "

Doing it for the fans in Mildura....

Gotta love those photos. The kids don't care what the older grouches like us think of the individual players, or whether they're new or a rookie. They're all Tigers to them and happy as Larry to get a Tiger signature  ;D
