Joel Selwood Geelong captain

JOEL Selwood has promised to lead with his actions on the football field, but admits there is pressure to stand up to the deeds of Geelong's two premiership captains before him.

Selwood was anointed a future leader almost as soon as he walked into Skilled Stadium as a teenager when drafted by the Cats in the first round in 2006.

But Selwood's leadership credentials were made official yesterday when he was named Geelong's new captain, replacing Cameron Ling, who retired after last year's Grand Final win.

Fellow midfield star Jimmy Bartel was named vice-captain, with James Kelly, Joel Corey, Corey Enright, Harry Taylor and Steve Johnson named in the leadership group.

It is the first time Johnson has been included in the player leadership group.

Selwood admitted he had big shoes to fill following in the footsteps of Ling and Tom Harley.

"They're probably two of the best captains the football club has ever had and maybe even throughout the AFL's history," said Selwood, who grew up supporting the Cats.

This 5 year run at the top they are on won't last forever but the Cats will be up there again this year. They won't fall back to the pack until most of the senior core - Bartel, Corey, Enright, Kelly, Scarlett and Stevie J - retire. Mind you with Selwood, Hawkins, Taylor, West and a few of the younger players still around as the new core and spine plus the early picks from the Ablett compo still up their sleeve they could rebuild again quite quickly rather than wallow down the bottom of the ladder as say Brisbane have done so since their three-peat glory days.

Don;t want to flog a dead horse but Lions was mid-table before Vossy went all out in hindsight he should of just kept natural progression through drafting kids. As for Geelong one of my favourite team's to watch(outside of Richmond of cause) they play attractive attacking style footy with abit of that edge most great sides have.
