Dreamtime at the G
« on: February 02, 2012, 08:25:34 AM »
Richmond are running a competition for Indigenous artists to design their guernsey for this years dream time at the G
Quote
The Richmond Football Club is calling for applications to design the guernsey to be worn in the annual Dreamtime at the 'G clash against Essendon on 19 May at the MCG.

In 2012 we are thrilled to announce that a competition will run for artists from 1 February-15 February 2012 to design the Dreamtime Guernsey for the big game on May 19th. The winning artist will receive $1000 prize money, 4 tickets to the RFC Function and a framed signed Dreamtime Guernsey by the Tigers captain and coach. This is a wonderful opportunity for artists to gain massive exposure with a live audience of 85 to 90 thousand people in attendance at the game and a TV audience of close to 2 million people. The winning artist will also be asked to speak about their winning entry at the RFC Function.

To find out more details please contact Coco Eke at dreamtimeguernsey@richmondfc.com.au. In 2012 there is more flexibility than last year in regards to the design of the Guernsey (away jumper in 2012) but there are still some strict specifications.

Great concept would be a real honour to have the club wear your design but I'm guessing not open to non indigenous entrants.

Think you are right Mr Magic - the flyer clearly stats "indigenous artists"

From the flyer:
Richmond is giving Indigenous artists the chance to design the away guernsey for the 2012 Dreamtime At The ‘G

Who isn't a fan of the thinking man's orange Tim Fleming?

And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

Why would it be only for Indigenous people? It says Indigenous artists... So I think they want people who are familiar with it.

There are non Aboriginal artists who do Aboriginal paintings and are very familiar with the concept.

It's a little too ambiguous. Some clarification would be good.

If a normal person designs something that looks better than what an artist has designed, they will take the better looking one..

So long as it has a Dreamtime/Indigenous theme.

Its all about what looks best on the RFC clash strip.

Aboriginal and Torres straight islanders have got strong legal protections on cultural / intellectual property.  It is not kosher to do aboriginal art if you are not aboriginal unless you are given the nod.  Only a few non indigenous artists have been given the go ahead to do this.  It is fair enough, it is like doing knock offs.  There is a strong spiritual element linked with the art.  If you tried to pull a swifty and got found out, they would let Gina Rhinehart use you for a night.

It makes sense for it to be just for Indigenous designers/artists.
